homemade doors and top?

Anybody have a thought about this?

I actually tried to make one from plywood when I first got my jeep (complete with shredded soft top). I just couldn't make it fit good enough, then again Ias working with plywood and some basic tools. What I ended up doing was basically making a windjammer out of plywood. I framed out the inside of the main loop of the rollcage right behind the seats, then cut a sheet of ply to fit and built in a plexiglass window. 2 dozen screws and I was set for a winter! The top made from the remnants of the soft top, and the doors were still good. While not a perfect soluction, the halfcab survived a brutal chicago winter.

Your post got me to thinking about the time an old timer spotted my jeep in a parking lot while he was waiting for his wife to get her hair done. He told me he made a wooden top for his that was so high he could stand up in it, but she made him get rid of it, said it looked like an outhouse on wheels. not much help, but it made me laugh. Alex

My ex-brother in law had (still may have, for all I know) a '49 Willys with a plywood top (enclosing just the front seats; the back (no rear seats) was open) and doors. Looked pretty good, actually. I've though of doing the same on my CJ5.

Well I think I might try making a plywood top within the next couple of weeks. I'd rather have a full top but I don't know how I'd fit the rounded corners on the back. Also I'll probably make a frame out of channel iron, I don't really want to spend a fortune, otherwise I'd try and buy a factory one. I might just make a halfcab since I really just want it for the winter. I'll keep my doors, I'm not going to mess with making new ones. I'll post some pictures when I get it done.

I made a sheetmetal hard top for my wrangler. I sretched the body and frame 20" so nobody made a top that size, 20" longer than a wrangler, 4" shorter than a cj-8. It took me about 3 weekends to build and I then had it coated with Line-x truck bed coating. Its removable, and I get compliments on it everywhere I go. Unless somone knows what a cj-8 full hard top looks like, most people couldn't tell the diff.

I was just going to ignore the rounded corners in back; actually my intention was to make the plywood top slip over the outside of the body, about 1", and then it would rest on the body on 1x1 rails glued to the inside of the top, and triangular gussets in the corners where it overhangs. I would avoid the steel frame, it'd actually be stronger if it was glued (and screwed) together with, say, 1x1's in all the corners.

The idea of using the 1x1s and glue is a better idea than using a steel frame. I think too I'll just square the back off at the corners and then add a curved piece on the inside to fill in the space. I'm not really sure about the 1" overhang because I'm still wanting to use my soft doors. Thanks for the input.
