Just finished my Home made snorkle using RV sewer Pipe and 3" PVC pipe. took about 4 hours and works nice. I'll do a write-up later but I used Ideas and got from Bucher and other places on the net. Inside the fender I used the flex sewer pipe for RV's that you can buy at walmart. It matched up to the PVC pipe perfectly and fit nice inside the fender. I cut a 3" hole in the side of the stock air box for the pipe to enter the side. Then I sealed off the stock hole in the front of the air box.
All in all, I feel better performance because I've already opened up my exhaust and it looks cool as all get out too.

That looks real nice, and I bet it cost you way less than an ARB.That is exactly how mine is going to look when I'm doneThe reason I have'nt started building mine yet is because I have'nt figured out how I'm going to keep water from being sucked into the engine.I posted that same question on here a few months ago and did'nt get a definite answer...so the million dollar question is how do you keep water out of you're engine? Some kind of weep hole?Baffles?

I see the straps holding the snorkel to the body on the windshield column but how did you attach it the column? Did you paint the PVC pipe with flat black spraypaint or what? Looks really good and clean work!!!

I'm using plumbers putty around my distributor and plugs to help keep water out. The main reason I put it in though wasn't for river crossings, it was to get more (colder) air at the same time help keep all the muddy water out that gets in when I hit the river beds.

I drilled two 1/16 holes in the column and used a sheet metal screw in each band. I also used silicone to help seal the holes as I put in the screws.

This is not a difficult mod and I'm out about $30 for all the parts I used.

what do you mean? thats what the snorkel is for to keep water out of your engine or do you mean the engine bay? first off some people say water ruins altenators, but from my exp which is i love water crossing hence building mine. ive driven across a river during feb and the water was coming over my hood flowing fast, ive been stuck in water up to my seats and you couldnt see the rear floor with water up past the tail lights for about 4 hrs . jeep started right up every single time even 4 hrs later and thats with the exhaust under water and i have never had a problem with my alt what so ever. if you want to completely water proof your entire engine which would be ALOT of work which would include building a water tight box for your computer with either some kind of fan to a vent tube or just a vent tube and make part of the box so you can open it when not in water becuase you dont want your comp geting too hot. next you would need to silicone and/or rtv your dist, silicone all your plugs and wires ALL OVER . removeable vent tubes to your dipstick (and to ds for auto tranny if no manual) and to both axles along with both your tranny and transfercase. then youd need to tear your dash apart and silicone EVERYTHING in there along with your fuse box, youll also need to extend your exhuast up to the roof.

figured all that info would be good for future searches so lets not hijack his thread lol

I think he was talking about water that gets sucked into the exposed air intake like in a rain. Kinda curious myself......

I'm using a K&N filter in my stock air box. It only ran me about 20$ and they are water "proof / resistant" There is room for about 1 gal of water to collect in the box before it starts causing any problems. Of course little bits of rain water at a time will be dried by the air moving into the box and evaporated by engine heat.

Somebody asked earlier. I used glossy black spray paint on white PVC pipes. My buddy thought they were black tubes it came out so clean.

Hey, so I was flipping through my newest Summit catalog, and in my least favorite part, the ricer section, there was a thing they had that you add to a ricer airtube that says that it stops water from coming in, but I can't figure how. Says it stops hyfro-locks if you gp pud muddlin. Think it would do any good on XJ airtube? I like water crossings, but high water scaares me, so I can't see myself going through stuff that is TOO deep, but I figure if it is anything good, I'd stick t under my hood.........but then again, it is in the ricers section, so I would automatically assume it's crap........any input from anyone?

Yea I've seen them. It's a bypass valve that activates when the main intake gets suddenly clogged up. When the main air flow stops, the pressure on the valve causes it to open under the hood and allow another route for the air to come in. They are usually located after the filter and not before. Usually on rice burners the intake opening is low so the chance of sinking the opening in a puddle is greater than on a jeep which is higher up in the engine bay. Frankly if your in water high enough to flow into an snorkel opening you're pretty much screwed anyway.

I have a semi-conical K&N on top of the snorkel on my YJ. I need to put a pre-filter on it to keep the big chunks of mud out of it, but otherwise it works fine in the rain (and here in FL we get nearly monsoon-styl rains).
