Here\'s one you guys might get a kick out of...

Has anybody else ever done this? I needed to install some cab mounts on my truck (there were no front cab mounts on it when I bought it, no engine mount bolts, either), and I didn't feel like paying $40/each for the rubbers and bolts.

The solution? I bought some $0.99 hard rubber hockey pucks at the sporting goods store (drilled some 1/2" holes in them), used some hardened bolts I had in my garage inventory, and modified some large washers to use as retainers. Custom cab mounts?

This is an old "body lift" substitute trick, and it will work(for a while!) the problem is the rubber must be the wrong compound or something because they will eventually rot and crack and break apart. You can buy a complete aftermarket body mount bushing kit for $50-$80. You can get the bolts at the hardware store. Where did you hear $40 each? a dealer?

$40/each was the price at a local shop where I have bought aftermarket fenders and doors for my trucks. Their prices are normally very good. I guess that only applies to certain parts they sell =(

The way I look at it, if the pucks just last for a couple of years, they will be easy enough to replace at that point in time.

If you use the pucks don't forget to anti-seize the threads, then they'll be a breeze to swap and you won't put it off too long. Was the $40 quote for them to install the mounts as well?, I think I gave about $8 apiece new from chevy a few years back.

Might want to be careful, my neighbor knew someone who did that, took a corner to hard and the body slid right off the frame right as he was rounding the corner, must have been a riot. I would rather pay the $40 a piece, than pay damages for sliding right off the frame (and down the street or into a yard probably).

I've heard of the hocky puck trick before. I think people use to use that for cheap body lifts. Anyhow, I just bought a set of Energy Suspension Poly Body mounts for $100 at 4Wheel Parts. Way better than hockey pucks and way cheaper than $40 each from your dealer.

Boss, have you run into any problems installing your new mounts? I got the ES mounts as well and have managed to install 6 of the 8. The rear ones are a pain in the ass. The factory stuff has decided to become one piece of metal and I managed to ruin a couple of nuts that go up into blind holes. Will need to drill holes through floor in order to replace the bolts. I've already bought replacement bolts for the stuff I need to repair. BTW the instruction sheet sucks as it makes no mention of removing the gas tank to get the last 2 out.

I changed all the rubber bushings on my truck to poly too (except for engine and motor mounts). The bed doesn't hit the cab anymore when it's flexed up, and the cab doesn't bang around on the frame anymore. There's a bit more vibration, but the whole truck just feels much more solid. It's gone from being a total rattletrap when I bought it to being surprising rattle-free for a 23 year old truck. The fact that the poly should never wear out or crack is comforting too.
