Help with realizing a dream!

I bought my ’79 CJ5 when I was a senior in high school and had planned to drive across America in it using only two lane roads as a way of celebrating my graduation. I flipped it on black ice and spent two months putting it back together at the expense of my saved up traveling money.
So when I started college, I was determined to save up until I graduated and try again. Well, I graduated and got married a week later (no, I hadn’t just met her, we had dated for three years), so there went the chance and money again.
Now I’m gainfully employed and my wife is a Grad student who is talking about spending a summer in Latin America for school. I have the option of going with her and leaving the Jeep (though she is talking about Brazil...don’t they still make CJs?) or staying stateside and fulfilling my dream.
My problem is that my old CJ5 is getting weary, as is my wallet’s reaction to soaring gas prices. What I would like to do is take some of the strain off of the 304 while it’s running along the highways (55mph). I figure that there are three ways to go:

1. Move the 304 forward enough to accept an NV4500/D20 and still have a rear drive shaft.
2. Swap my D20 out for a D18 with overdrive and put in a D44 offset rear axle to match.
3. Or leave my 3.54 gears in the axle and put 33” tires under the Jeep with a nice lift.

I figure that the costs of the first two are well above my budget...for that I could buy a used CJ7 and swap my T18/304 into it, though that doesn't solve anything.

What does everybody think I should do?

Any other suggestions?

I want to keep the off road ability as much as possible while still maintaining decent street manners. Since I have matured (or have I ?) I have become more interested in tackling some of the challenges offered across America and as such, stock is not an option.
Thanks in advance,

Fritz

A friend of mine just put a nv4500 in his cj-7, Even though he love it, he does complain about the length and weight. That transmission is too big in my opinion for a cj-5. I don't think you can move your 304 up enough to accomadate the new lenth. Who knows maybe i'm wrong. That's definitely a tough call about going with your wife or going across the country. Are you sure that your wife is not going to be upset if you ditch her for the jeep? I know my wife would say "Go ahead honey, it won't bother me" when she really means "If you don't go with me, you won't be coming near me for a very long time" Good luck in whatever you choose.

I have been thinking about the same issue with my 78 CJ5 304 T150 D20 4.56 pumpkins with 33" tires. (Not the wife thing.) I want to get some over-drive capability that would help with the 4.56 under-drive. I have considered swapping in a Chevy V6 in an attempt to get enough room to install a NV4500. (Still thinking about that one, maybe on the next jeep project.)

My final thought is to swap in a AMC 401 for the tired 304 to get a little more power when needed (looking for a motor to rebuild at this time), swap in a 77 CJ T-18 with 6.32 1st (sitting on garage floor ready to go), swap out the guts of the D20 for a Tera 3.15 kit, then when the bucks allow, swap out the 4.56's for some taller gears (3.54?) to get a better ride to the trail.

The new crawl ratio would be 6.32x3.15x3.54= 70.47 Well within what is deemed reasonable but without to much sacrifice of the "drive to the trail" speeds and rpm. You could even put taller gears in the pumpkins than the 3.54 and still have a better than stock crawl ratio with this set up.

Now as for the wife, sending her to Brazil alone- latin lover types running all over the place- sun and sandy beaches were most of the women are topless.... Humm.... DO YOU REALLY NEED TO STOP AND MAKE A DECISION ON THIS ONE?

Good Luck!

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Dear Extinct in Nashville: There is NO WAY you should stay home and let your sweetie go to Brazil. What are you, nuts? What you should do is tell her: "I just cannot BEAR the thought of being away from you." and GO WITH HER. That way when you return, you will have a much better relationship in which to build your dream jeep and then you BOTH go across the U.S. Chicks want to know they are VALUED. If you don't do it, then Xavier in Brazil just might try HIS luck with your chick./wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif If she spends just ONE NIGHT with Xavier, she will hang onto that memory forever, and it will unconsciously put a decimal point on the relationship that she has with you./wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif And one more thing.....tell her EVERY DAY how valuable she is; and (if it is true) what good ideas she has, or what a great smile she has...but PICK SOMETHING and comment on it frequently. Chicks like that sort of thing./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

How gainful is gainfully employed?

If it's real good then you have a viable excuse to stay, and take a couple weeks off while she's gone.

If it's "I've never had a job for more than four months, now I'm outta college and am wrapping burgers all year instead of just the summers",gainful, then go with her!!!

otherwise I think I'd err on Dave's side.

I love women just as much as the next guy, but I gotta tell ya, I just went cross-country with a buddy of mine for 4 1/2 months this past summer. 19,000 miles in a stock 94 YJ. Drove it on the beach in Florida, from Ouray to Telluride off-road over Imogene Pass to 13,200 feet of elevation, had it on Lion's Back in Moab, it touched the sands of the beaches of both oceans and the Gulf in the Florida Keys and in Texas, it drove on Route 66, through the French Quarter of New Orleans, all around the Jeep plant in Toledo, all 400-someodd miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and most of Pacific Coast Highway from San Louis Obispo to the Oregon Border.

Get a Jeep, and go see the country. ..but I agree - don't let your girl go. Go with her now, but then take her with you when you go see the country. DO NOT LET YOUR DREAM DIE. There's nothing like seeing the country in a Jeep. Do you think she'll live in a tent for 4 1/2 months? /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif She could be a keeper. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Good luck

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I think that noise is from the constant-mesh input gearing, and gets worse as you go down in ratio....toward first gear, that is. We have owned several and some SM465's as well. The 465's stay pretty quiet till the input shaft bearing starts to go south./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

I lived in Brazil and saw some pretty ugly violence. I personally was held up at gun point on three separate occasions. Several times I came upon a crowd of people surrounding a dead guy in the street waiting for the federalis to show up. Gun shot noise at night as common as the Sea World fireworks here by my house in San Diego. Rio is the worst, by far. I was mostly in Sao Paulo and Santos which are a cut above Rio from a violence perspective.

Brazil is a beautiful land. Most of the people would give you the shirt off their back (probably their only shirt). Topless women.....that's the French Riviera, not Brazil (except carnival).

My friend wants to fly down there with parted out VIN plates from an FJ40 or CJ5 and attach them to a new vehicle and drive home.....hmmmm?

Thanks Guys,

As many of you may have already guessed, I will most likely go with her...who am I kidding...I'm definately going with her. I pretty much always knew I would. I'll get to fulfill my dream soon enough. Is she worth it? Yes. She told me that I didn't have to sell my Jeep when I had to get another car. That's love.

I'm still wondering about the highway thing though. Would using higher gears in the diff help? How would this affect the drivabilty...wouldn't it make 2nd & 3rd lag? I never use first ON road, so thats moot. My (original Jeep) T18 lowers the gears enough so that off road wouldn't suffer. Again, what do you guys think?

Oh yeah...Great comments, you guys must have great Jeep chicks.

I was just reading the January 2001 Four Wheeler and in the reader's rigs on page 118, there is a CJ5 that supposedly has a small block chevy and an NV4500, I am skeptical. I a pre-71 CJ5, and I am considering engine swaps,(I currently had the F-head) and I know a small block can be done, but it would be so tight. When I was little, my Dad had a 55 CJ5 with an aluminum block Oldsmobile engine, I think it was a 265 out of an F88. It also had the power steering off of the Olds. I would like to look at it to see how it was put together. He used to hill-climb and do a little recreational racing. He said it was one of the cleanest conversions he has ever seen, and that still holds true today, and it has been 30 years. If anyone reading this knows of a 55 CJ5 somewhere in Utah with this conversion, I would be interested in looking at it. I unfortunately have been relocated to Utah while my wife is in Grad school so the old jeep might still be local. Although it is probably dead in some salvage yard, undoubtedly smashed by some heavy footed teen. I would like to have the option of a V-8, but I don't think the small block with an NV4500 is really possible with a CJ5, unless I stretch it out to CJ6 length, MMMMMMMMMM, appealing. The nice thing about the aluminum block Olds engine would be the weight. And it fit in the short Jeep. I think with a little creative drive-train work, the small block NV4500 combo could be possible. Your radiator would be right against the grill, but I think it might be possible. With the right transfer case adapter, it could be possible. You might check with Advance Adapters and see if they know of any swaps of this type. It might also pay to see if the Jeep in the Jan 2001 Four Wheeler, is genuine, or if it is a typo. Maybe the guy just replaced the rear yokes with sprockets and runs a chain. This wouldn't be the best set up for articulation, but if you had a solid rear suspension it would work until the Jeep got pounded to pieces by the solid rear suspension. Just kidding.

I wish I had a great jeep chick. My wife is the Anti-Jeep. She doesn't give me any money for the jeep, she complains when I work on it, she hates the site of it, she won't let me talk to her about it. And if it where up to her, I wouldn't even own it. But luckily i'm pig headed and I don't care what she says. Whenever I want to spend the day working on it, I have to start a fight about something else so she doesn't even want to look at me. Then I can spend the day in the garage. (Man my life sucks)

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Kieth, I'm going to give you the Dr. Laura Schlessinger style of a reply to your AntiJeep post. If the wife hates the Jeep, that is symptomatic of SOME OTHER issue. The Jeep is just what she happens to be using to focus the anger on. Having BEEN THERE and having DONE THAT in a long-ago relationship, I can tell you that Dr. Laura is more right than wrong. These chicks are really nutty and finding out what the real problem is can be difficult, but there IS another problem./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif One thing I do know, however, if you preface EVERY remark with: "Honey, how would you...(or DO you)... FEEL about this...or that...or whatever." you will do a lot better. Chicks want to tell you how they FEEL about stuff, and they also want to know that you want to know how they FEEL about it./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif "Er...Honey; how would you feel about installing Detroit Lockers?"/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I'm totally with CJDave on this. I would focus on two things:

1) Focus on your wife's great qualities and constantly praise those.
2) Find ways to make sure your wife is getting what she's into to keep her life interesting.

The more you focus on her needs the more things will work out for you the way you want them to. It's the harder I work, luckier I get kind of thing.

You wouldn't believe how many hours/dollars you can spend on your jeep if you are buying flowers unexpectedly and for no apparent reason. Your wife's friends will even tell her how lucky she is and that your jeep is cool (you can't even buy that kind of marketing).

In my case, I think my wife is jealous of my obsession with my jeep. All the time I spend working on it, and talking about it. And the fact that she doesn't have any hobbies of her own doesn't help. I ask her to participate in everything I do, from club meetings to trail rides to helping me work on it, but she has absolutely no interest. If I asked her how she would feel about installing detroit lockers, first she would look at me like i'm crazy, then she would ask "How much does it cost and where are you getting the money for it". Little does she know that I have a whole crew of moonguys in the garage embezzling money from my paycheck to pay for jeep mods. I've come to the conclusion, that even though my wife is my soulmate, you can't have everything in common with the other person. Lets see, she doesn't like me playing golf, going shooting, going dirtbike riding, going 4 wheeling, working on my jeep. What the hell did I marry her for????? Just kidding.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif raymo has some good advice there, rick-o. If you look at the list of activities that you posted, you will see that they are all YOUR activities, not hers or the couple's. You asked "What did I marry her for?" even in jest, that deserves an answer, and the answer is a question: "What did SHE marry YOU for?" Answer: To SPEND TIME with you./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif I know it makes NO sense to you, but since when is logic a part of a relationship. The fact is, chicks want to spend time with their spouse. And they want to do it on THEIR terms....whatever that might be. Maybe this is a time for you to say: "The relationship is WHERE IT'S AT." and give up a few hobbies to concentrate on ONE GOOD HOBBY and your chick. Go to some outa-the-way antique/junk shop and let her browse to her hearts content, then a nice little lunchie at some quaint restaurant, then more browsing where she feels zero pressure to hurry. Chicks just LOVE that sort of thing. You will be amazed at the differnce that would make. How about a Jeep trip to some remote little hamlet to go through some shops? That's something for you, something for her and something for the coupleship later on that night when you get home./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif Maybe something will happen like it did to my friend Emmett. He was "paying his dues to the relationship and dutifully following his wife through shop after shop on the coast of CA in some tourist trap when he spies a rifle barrel sticking out of a cluster of items in a store that mainly sold antique dishes. He casually asked the price and the guy hardly looked up and said: "Oh, eighty dollars." Emmett almost dislocated his shoulder getting the checkbook out and did not draw an easy breath till he and the rifle were three blocks away for fear that something would go wrong. It was a 45-70 falling block in remarkeable shape, circa 1880's, worth over a thousand dollars in today's market. He found it in 1976. His eighty dollars has grown just a bit./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Anyway, you need to view this in a "team" sort of way, and make darn sure that the other member of the team gets to play as well as you./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

ExtinctJeep, Now that CJDave has given you marital advice, I just want to let you know a little something about Brasil. My Jeepchick happens to be from brasil, therefore I know a lot of brasilian people, and quite a bit about their culture. My first word of advice would be, Go with your Jeepchick! All the Brasilian men I know are bastards when it come to repecting another man's woman. They are usually very over confident due to the fact that there are ALOT more women in brasil than men(i think the ratio is something like 5:1 in some places). A brasilian guy usually has no qualms about going up to just about any woman and trying their luck...

Another thing is that as Raymo said, there is ALOT of violence in brasil due to their current economic situation, and according to my girlfriends family, it's gotten worse in the past year. If you go to rio, be careful ESPECIALLY at night. There are 12 year olds that will mug you at gun point. If you do go there, (rio) you will probably never see that many homeless kids again in your life (very very sad). My Jeepchick is from brasil, and she would never travel alone in Rio (she's from Minas Gerais). Bahia, is very beautiful, and the people are extremely hospitable, and equally as poor, I recommend you stop there if you're nearby.

COUPLE of other notes:
The Tools in Brasil absoutley suck. try to find decent
tools in brasil is like trying to find an old military
willys packed in a crate for $75 here in the US.

The Barbeque they have down there is reason enough to make
a trip down there...

There monetary unit the REAL (the R is pronounced like an H)
is worth alot less than a dollar (about half). So, your
money goes ALOT further in Brasil. Things are generally
cheaper there, but prices are not stable and fluctuate
frequently.

Brasil is a beautiful country, I suggest that you go with your wife. You may never have the chnace to make a trip like that again (while your still young anyways). It will always be easier to travel around this country than another one, so grasp the opportunity while you have it. Besides almost all of the women down there use those dental floss bikinis. Just imagine laying back on the beach drinking your Brahma (one of two beers in brasil, there not real big on beer variety down there), watching all of the eye candy walk by, as your good wife studies... Doesn't sound like there's too much to ponder to me. Don't stay because of a good job, you have the rest of your life to work, and employers will still need employees when you get back. Have a nice trip.

Tom
