Can anyone help me? I need to find a good camshaft and lifters. I have a 1974 CJ5 with the 304. I just got it not to long ago. The previous owner said the motor had about 5000 miles on the rebuild. Taking it apart I know the motor has been apart. If he rebuild it then he forgot to put lube on a lobe. I have one lifter that has no bottom to it and of course the Cam doesn't look much better (on that one lobe). The rest of the cam looks good though (GRIN). So I am looking for a Cam. The rest of the motor is as follows .30 over? (He said it was and I haven't measured yet) Edelbrock Performer and soon to have a Holley 600 Dbl pump on it. Any help??? Thanks, Carl

Depends a little on what you're looking for. If you want a good off idle to a decent midrange performer I'd recommend Comp Cams Part# 10-200-4 (grind #A 252H-10). This cam has a duration of 206 at .050 lift, slightly bumpier than stock it provides good low rpm performance. If you want to bump your power range up a little ( about 1250-3000) you could go with their #10-201-4 (grind# A 260H-10) with a duration of 212 at .050. This is a little warmer, but shouldn't hurt idle quality significantly. The next step up is# 10-202-4 (grind #A 268H-10) with a duration of 218 @ .050 this is starting to get lumpy, idle quality is noticably affected but you should still have a somewhat decent idle. Midrange rpm produces good power (1750- 3500 rpm). I wouldn't really recommend higher than this.

In my opinion the best cam ever made for a 304 wasn't made for the 304 at all! The camshaft out of an AMC 401 will fit right into your 304 and turn it into a "Gutless wonder with the idle of a top-fueler" to slightly misquote Jim Allen in his "Jeep 4x4: Performance Handbook." You can pick these up new for $130.
