My 89 YJ has had issues with the hydrolic clutch for about 3 months now, I took it to a mechanic (new to me and not reffered by anyone)

They said that since I had allready recently replaced the master cylinder that it must be the slave cylinder inside the clutch.

They verbally quoted me without opening the transmission or even looking at it $250

I thought "wow sounds good"

So I took it to them then next day.........

After they opened it up they said "yup it's the slave, their is fluid all over it" the next day they called me and said it would be an iditional $125 for labor and $175 for an "upgraded cylinder made out of cast metal"

It would have totaled over $500 with tax and stuff but they agreed todo it for $500 flat

Now here is the problem.......

Pedal presure disapeared within 2 weeks AGAIN!

They said if they have to remove my trans to chekc it out and it is not the slave ..."they would charge me for the Labor because it is something else"

I didnt think this was fair so I sugeested we change out the MASTER just in case it happened to be that.....they said ok but for $35.00 and I supplied the part.

I said ok

4 days later, no preasure!

So now they want to try swapping out the lines for $75-95 free labor

Is this even fair? They never fixed the problem to begin with.

What recourse do I take? Help!

Are they liable? Shoudl I request my money back? What do I do?

The jeep is over at the mechanic.

They may not be bleeding the hydraulic system correctly. The 87-89 are a bitch to get right. you will go through about a quart of fluid to get it all out,(air). I went through this a few years ago with mine, I had bad parts though. sorry to say most shops only guarrantee the hard parts and labor is the same reguardless. I did the work myself and pulled the parts 3 times and replaced the complete clutch hydraulics. Master, slave and lines. I feel for you. you may get some help from the manufacture of the parts,(if they are bad). But don't hold your breath. But have them try bleeding the system again and again till it gets right, or your sure the problem is elswhere.

As a mechanic; I feel for you!
TELL THEM ! they will presure or vac. bleed the system w/dot4 at their expense or you will get the BBB, or BAR.on the case. They diagnoised the problem, but didn't rectify it...
STAND YOUR GROUND!!!!!!
Remember they broke it, they buy it!
Just an old world mechanic rambling... BUT THEY SHOULD STAND BY THEIR WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As the old saying goes; say what you do and do what you say!!!!

MAX. or put my jeep back in the state it was brought to you in and bite me.................
you get nothing ! it will stand up in court if you decline the repair they have to give the vehicle back to you in the same shape they received it!!!!!

Bloody hell... How much did they charge you?? Mind you you should have told them you didn't want the parts to be made out of 24K gold

If somebody quoted me that kind of money I'd tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine... They must be of their trolley!!

I know it is difficult if you haven't got the ability to do it yourself, but surely you can find some buddy to help you out... Time to start learning and get your hands dirty....Everybody had to start somewhere and with the help of a good manual you're halfway there.

I know hindsight is always atleast 20/20, but for what it's worth, for what you've forked out, you could have gotten a tranny lift. That would help you out by-yourself.

Now, as far as dealing with this mechanic I can only come up with this. Total up what you've either paid, or agreed to pay. Look at that figure, and see if you can live with it. If you can. Demand that they make good on their claim to fix it. Like it was mentioned before, they diagnosed it, they should fix it.

If your not happy with the figure. You will need to take them up in court. Hopefully you have some stuff in writing about them standing behind their work, but I'm not sure how CA works, but I don't think you'd favor to well on the word of mouth defence.

I know it's not easy, I probably wouldn't be the best at it. But, in the least, you need to get it straight with them that you've paid a lot, and worse yet, been without your jeep for a while. It needs to be fixed, and they need stop the screwing around.

Yes they do make cast ones and they're a lot better than the plastic ones. My clutch went out on me 2 years ago and I bought a whole clutch kit for it, had the plastic slave, pressure-plate, pilot bearing, and clutch disk for 300 bucks(canadian). Everything went together nicely and the clutch worked fine after. But six months ago the clutch went out again and I replased the master(IT was the only thing that wasn't new in the system) but clutch still didn't work. So I finally broke down and pulled the tranny out and low and behold, my new plastice slave was cracked and useless. I got on the phone and ordered a new one. When I got it the slip said it was 175 bucks and I was wondering why it was so expensive untill I took it out and it was a nice beefy cast unit. I will never buy another plastic slave if a cast one is ofered as well.

It sounds like you are in too far already. You should have asked for a written estimate. You should have asked for the old parts. Now about all you can do is claim foul and possibly go to small claims court. You don't have to PROVE anything, just convince the judge that you are telling the truth and have been wronged. Keep any receipts and pay by credit card.

I had a problem with Precision Tune. My TPI sbc was running rich and I didn't know why. I took it to them to have it connected to a scanner and find the problem. They claimed to have fixed it and also changed the plugs and the O2 sensor (I had changed the plugs 2 days before but they were fuel fouled again).

When I got the Jeep back it was still running rich and fouled out the plugs and ruined the O2 sensor within a week. I bought a scanner and found the coolant temp sensor was bad. I called the regional office of Precision Tune and got half my money back. I was still out over $100 for nothing but I took the "bird in the hand".

Who makes the metal slave?
sounds like its something that I should offer on every yj/tj clutch I install ! if it lasts twice as long as stock plastic it would be a great improvement, and being metal it should dissapate heat better and not boil fluid as easy! Can't beleive i've never seen it advertised anywhere. its gold waiting to be mined!

learn something new everyday...!!!
thanks gas.

I'd like to know more about this metal slave also. That's definately the weakest part of the system. If you can find more information on this holy grail please pass it along.
