Help I\'am stranded again

I have a 1987 cherokee with mpi fuel injection. It some times will not start or just stops running. There is spark engene will crank. When I bought it the owner said that if it stops just unplug the crank shaft sensor on the flywheel and it will start. I have replaced this sensor but it still stops with warning.I have checked all pluges and wires and could not find anything. None the less if you unplug the crank shaft sensor and plug it back in it will start and run fine for a day a week or a month you never know.

Re: Help I\'am stranded again

Yep..could be a fuel pump relay (located passenger side in engine compartment) Could also be a bad ground on your fuel pump (should be a black wire leading from the tank /fuel pump to ground...I'd check this first)

Do you hear the fuel pump run for 1-3 seconds when you turn the key to the "on" position..If Not then its most likely the relay. If yes then it could be a bad ground (causing an intermittant no-start / stop condition.

there is also a vacuum actuated fuel pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail (toward front of engine).

Good luck...did ou get the PDF file on the RENIX MPI system?

No idi not. Were can I dounload it?
There are three relays on the passenger side. Which one is the fuel pump? The ground is good. The fuel pump does not run when the key is first turned on. There is no power at the fuel pump connector.

Re: Help I\'am stranded again

Thanks to all posters, everyone was helpfull.
The Renix manuel did the trick,I just wish I had it before I bought $31.00 worth of useless HAYNES manuels. The fuel pump relay was the problem,AUTOZONE swore I did not even have a fuel pump relay. I also own a 1976 cj5 304 is there anywhere there are some good manuels for these? I will post this question to the short wb also.

Re: Help I\'am stranded again

I had no idea how long I was fighting this problem until I looked this thread up.
The relay in the last post did not do the trick.
We had given up on fixing the problem and parked if after changing the ECU, fuel pump, filter, relay sockets.
I started running tests again last week and finely found that at some time a mechanic has stuck one of those test lights into the lead wire from the fuel pump, that tiny little hole in the wire caused it to corrode in two.
I found it more by feel because the wire looked fine but it had a limp spot in it.

Very good you found the corroded wire. I once had this in a motorcycle. Almost impossible to find... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/applause.gif

Re: Help I\'am stranded again

My mj drove me nuts. It would stall, then start after a few hours sometimes wouldn't start. Turned out to be a ground. I cleaned the firewall ground and ran a seperate ground right to the fuel pump ..... all the gremlins disappeared. If gauges are going wonky ... check grounds.

Hope this helps.

Re: Help I\'am stranded again

Wondering if you had 2 problems, still have one.

You said: """"None the less if you unplug the crank shaft sensor and plug it back in it will start and run fine for a day a week or a month you never know.""""

How's that going to fix the broken/corroded wire in the fuel pump circuit? Isn't that on the other side?

But - you may have the same problem with the crank sensor harness, the wiring side of it, not the sensor side of the connector. It swings in the breeze. If a yo yo was probing through the insulation, he may have probed it there too.

That was the first thing replaced along with cleaning all the connectors, that did help at first so there were two problems, no doubt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
