Well guys I got the head gasket fixed in the XJ and the oil leak stopped. Now I have what i think is a neutral saftey switch problem. Are they hard to change? The xj wouldn't start one day till I jiggled the gear shift but it has been ok since. it has been acting like it was hard to start so I had the battery checked the alt. checked and the drag on the starter checked. one place said I had starter problems one place said it was ok. When I got home I shut it down but then went to start it later and it is like dead you can just hear a click and the fuel pump come on. any Ideas out there before I tear in to it..Thanks

Start with the basics.
1> Check the battery connections.
2> Check the starter connections.
3> Insure you have a solid ground connection.

If your neutral safety is giving you headaches, ( I don't think this is the case) though you stated 2 distinct problems, insure that it is operating properly. I drive sticks so I can't help you there. The connections are the best place to start....no pun intended.

Good Luck

your starter solenoid could also be the culprit, just another thing to think about, if it was the nuetral safety switch it wouldnt do anything at all, no click or anything

Starters are flaky. When they start to go, it's hit or miss with a bench test. It may work fine one time and drag slightly another. That's what happened to me and then it just died. Fortunately I was in the Autozone parking lot ( i was there to have it tested ONE MORE TIME) when it did die.

Thanks everybody: I guess I will have to buy the N.S.S. new and then look at the starter if that don't fix it. breaking the NSS was my fault not knowing what I was doing. I have my CJ to get around in so I will give it a few days. I did contact one jeep used parts place and put in a order but it will take the 48 hrs. It is a jeep thing I now thing I understand.

Not having an auto myself, I agree with the guys who say it's your starter. I had the same symptoms this summer and couldn't get the Jeep started when I had to enter the ferry. Nice. But hey, after 15 years, something may get old. Couldn't see in your profile how old your XJ is, however.
