I have had good luck with the people who post items for sale on this board, until now! Has anyone else had problems? Has anyone found a way to get their money back? Monday I am going to talk to the postal inspectors to see if they can help. Does anyone have some advice?
thanks, jjc

Let ORC know too. I doubt they can do anything other than ban the seller, but they really need to know these things.

I will not bad mouth someone until I have all the facts, but once I do, you better believe I will let you all know. I did find something neat, on the ATT directory web site I typed in the street name and zip code and got the phone number for his parents. I talked to his mother who gave me his phone number, typed that in and got his real adress....I will let you know how far I get

I got taken here on this board last summer, it wasn't much only $12 for freight, but it was the principal. The person who did it, has not been around since. He proberly change his name. Because of him I make sure who ever I deal with I go out of my way to do right. Only postal checks and cod. 99% of those here are good people but there is alway that one.

I always thought that getting the money sent certified mail would be a good idea, in that you have a signature. But i maybe naive to think that would be safe, luckily i have had good transactions. It is a real bad thing for a Jeeper to cheat another. That would be the type of person that would pass you by on the trail when you need help.

I hate to hear things like this. I have never been taken(yet). I am sorry to hear that you were. I have recently started using Ebay, and have found several payment services that let you pay people through a service. This eliminates a lot of potential BS. Check out paypal.com for your next transaction. I hope you get your money or the product you purchased.

Good Luck,

I'm with Brownbagg on this, its not the money as much as the principle of dealing with an unknown person. (he was unknown to me at the time, still is as far as I'm concerned) I was reading posts back in Nov/Dec of last year? I came across one where Chuck Hadley was speaking with someone and he mentioned that he needed some softtop parts for the driver side of his jeep. Well, I had those parts, RIGHT and LEFT side, I checked them before I sent them and I told him for the price of postage he was more than welcome to have them. He said he would send postage, all the while crying poormouth. I said no problem, just send postage when you get them. He said he would and he also said he was gonig to send some of his wifes christmas cookies along with the deal, fat chance, I'm still waiting, and its almost easter, HAH. The last time I spoke with him he told me I sent the wrong parts, both were for the passenger side (I checked I know what I sent, if by chance if I did send the wrong parts does that mean I can be stiffed by the buyer) and he had to RE-WELD it to make it work. If they were wrong send them back, or send my postage. I will be very very careful when dealing with someone like that in the future, and to think he was so poor he could take a week off from work to go bash up his jeep at tellico? Go figure. Thanks Chuck, for nothing. Just my 2 cents worth. Later.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Stuff like that has a certain degree of risk to it, just due to human nature. I have sent out 23 AMC V8 Shop & Garage Tips booklets to Jeep guys on this BBS and on the PM page. I just ask for my cost of copy, binding and mailing....it isn't a for-profit thing. Out of 23 sent, only TWO have stiffed me. One in Canada, and one in Utah. As for the parts I have bought from other Jeep guys, some have not met expectations, and some exceeded my expectations. I really believe that you can deposit in "Bank A" and withdraw from "Bank B". If you ship/sell something for less than it was probably worth, sooner or later you will have someone send you something for less than you should have paid. I try not to keep mental track of this kind of stuff because having the "balance sheet mentality" will take all the fun out of life. I do, however, understand that there are a lot of really irresponsible people out there along with just plain crooks./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Rules for life....

I have purchased & sold several items over the internet, and have yet to get burned.

But here is a little tip for life - whether you are loaning money to someone, or sending out parts or money on "good faith" expecting the other party to follow through:

Only loan out what you are willing to take a 100 percent loss on.

If you aren't willing to take a complete loss on your parts/money and walk away, then find some other way to handle the transaction or don't do it. Believe me, if you live by this little rule, you will get through transactions like this with much greater ease /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I've had real good luck with buying and selling, stuff I bought was not as good as I thought they would be, but still got a good deal. Instead of a great deal. I always felt better knowing where they live. I would travel cross country to collect $100, one way or the other I would get paid.

Bird -

Well, I don't want to get into some big explanation of how I screwed this up because really, if you're not happy, then it's my fault.

I know I never sent the money, because I lost your address, phone number, the whole mess. I had alot going on then, and this is pretty out of character for me, although I have been known to screw things like this up in the past.

I wasn't crying poormouth - everyone on this board knows I just bought a $30,000 truck, so don't say that - they'll think I'm a real A-hole or totally nuts or something. As far as the re-welding went - yes, I did have to - but that was no big deal, I was just mentioning it as funny that I kept trying to get a drivers side and you sent me two passenger sides - story of my life - I got a kick out of it - I wasn't bitching about the quality of the free top rods you sent.

I'm sorry I screwed this up because you were nice to have sent the items and I feel bad about making your experience on the for sale board bad. I have built my entire Jeep off of that board and have had no problems. I have a couple of other loose ends on the Net, and I think I'll get them wrapped up as well as this is bad - it's just that I get busy and so do the other guys, and the next thing you know you've got some unclosed deal going for 2 years.

Just to set the story straight - Bird is right - he sent me some parts for free out of good faith and I said I would mail him back the shipping cost of $6 or so and a little something extra for the trouble and I did not. I'll do it as soon as I hear from him, and I apologize to him and everyone else.

Anyway, if you send me your address, I will be happy to make good. You're not going to be getting any Christmas cookies - I ate all of them :), but I was serious before - I'll have to think of something else cool now. Hopefully we can resolve this soon. - Chuck

Well, Chuck, at least you are willing to make good, publicly, now you are going to be held accountable by your fellow Jeepers.

I personally had a part sent from a fellow Jeeper here on the BBS board. I was to send him $15.00 for the part and shipping. I went and got a money order for that amount and sent it out. (Although it took me about a week from when I said I would do it.) Well, the mail never got to his address. Mind you I've been having problems with the Post Office, I have 5 claims for lost mail along with stop payment fees close to $200.00. Anyway, the guy didn't tell me that he hadn't received the check for about 2 months. I promptly wrote another one and Federal Expressed it.

The lesson here is that sometimes the mail gets screwed up. And it's up to the seller to make contact with the buyer and advise that the mail was not received. In this case we had a happy ending, but be aware it's not always the sending party's fault.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif we had the same thing happen when we bought Glxdriver's QT barrel differential and sent a check to Utah. WEEKS LATER the check; inside a totally BEAT envelope; came straggling back as though it had been in a war. By that time we had sent another and it got there in regular time. It's a good idea to keep in close contact by e-mail when either stuff or dough is enroute. That way you aren't thinking: "Why that so-and-so...." and in reality the check was mutilated by the PO or the letter carrier is using the envelope for a coaster for his moist coke on the dashboard of the little DJ he drives./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I have only done two deals over the net...I sold a set of half doors to a guy in Illinois, and a battery to another Jeeper in upstate NY.
Both guys sent the money right away and I returned with a quick response too. I wish I could remember their names so I could say
that doing business with these two Jeepers is very legit.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif AND NOT ONLY THAT!......Chuck still owes my moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif an answer on the question of rigging a choker using a screw pin shackle. "Does the screw pin in the shackle go in the loop or does the live line go past it?"/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I've only done one deal over the internet and that was with someone on this board ... forgot his name. He bought my Besttop Trailmax seats. He sent me a money order and I sent him the seats. Worked perfectly although either one of us could have screwed the other person. It feels good to trust people.

Mornin Chuck,

You're right , I guess I should be /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif happy /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif every time this happens to me. Thanks for trying to "make it right" although I had to post here and name you, duh. I never would have agreed to send those parts in the first place if postage hadn't been agreed upon. I thought I was helping, it was almost to much trouble. How many times can one lose someone's e-mail, phone, and address? (I provided it on more than one occasion, even called you to make sure the parts got there when I didn't hear from you) I don't have them anymore but I assure you they were both different, I checked it out before I boxed and sent them. If you lost my address, phone number, "the whole mess" why didn't you use the venue of this board to contact me? If they were wrong, why not speak up when I contacted you the 1st time? Why wait till the 3rd or 4th time we spoke to say they were? I have the feeling you were just trying to blow me off by telling me that the last time I spoke with you. No problem, by the tone in your voice the last time I spoke with you thats the impression I got. (for being an old guy I think I'm a pretty good judge of certain things) I didn't know you had just bought a 30K truck, congrats. Take care of your other loose ends, I hope you didn't treat them as you have me. Like I said before, I'm with Brownbagg on this one, its not the money, you said you were going to do something and your word isn't what its cracked up to be. I don't want the money now, I just wanted other people to be aware, use it and buy yourself some ginkoba, maybe it'll improve your memory, I know it does mine. Enjoy, later.
