i just aquired a dana 30 with the five bolt locking hubs that have a 'jeep 4x' sticker on the dial. i assume they are stock hubs. how are they removed? i am going to be putting a six bolt hub back on with a drive flange due to the quadratrac transfer case but i need to take this apart first TODAY.

also which brake caliper is better: the one that slides on the bracket or the one that slides on two mounting bolts?

thank you for the help

i haven't completely decided which way to put it back together but i need to take it apart today so i can drop off the two front housings to get the gears swapped.

Easy enough, 5 bolts take off the hubs, remove the rest, there are 2 very large nuts holding the hub on, one of them has a bent
washer as a lock, bend it flat, spin off the nut, off comes the rotor, etc. with bearings.
Hope this makes sense and helps.

i took the five bolts out but the locking hub won't move more than 3/4 inch from the wheel hub. it acts like there is a snap ring somewhere on the end of the axle shaft but i can take the plastic hub off to get to it. i took the dial off but that doesn't seem to help either. it looks like just a spring between the plastic hub and the wheel hub is all that is holding it together. if i have to destroy the hub to get it off i will, but i need to get it apart today.

There should be an internal snap ring after you removed the knob. Now the cam body and clutch retainer
can be removed to expose another snap ring on the axle. After it is remove, you should be able to
disassemble until you can remove the hub.

I just replaced my seals and bearing last weekend! The five bolts hold the hub in the wheel. The hubs must be unlocked when you remove them. As was said earlier in posts there are two, one small and one larger snap rings in place. The a flat nut with a washer bent over the back of it, as to prevent it from loosening. Then a washer and the next flat nut! I used a special tool to remove both nuts, that i got from a aprts store. My hub was frozen on the wheel, that could be the case for you. Then you have to deal with five more bolts that hold the outer wheel in place to the spindle. If you find the spindle frozen also let me know, I worked out a process that took about 4 hours a gallon of penetrating lube, a 3 pound sledge a torch, and a wooden block, you can get the picture from there!

i feel pretty stupid now. the silicone used to seal the lockout to the hub was about 1/8 inch down each spline and stiff enough to not allow the hub body to come off the hub. i own three four wheel drives and my brother has one but none of them have lockouts. this is my first experience with them. i am very gratefull for the advice.
