Hardtop Installation

I bought a 94 Wrangler in April with a softtop only. Well, living in Massachusetts, it's starting to get cold. I recenlty bought a hardtop of a '92 Wrangler for $300, then I had it painted. It looks great. My only problem is I don't know how to install it. Does anybody know where I can get some instructions on how to install a hard top? Thanks!!

I assume a Wrangler top goes on the same as a CJ.

There are about 5 5/16" bolts on each side in the rear that go through the top lip of the body. They have a special rectangular nut on them that won't turn when you tighten the bolts. You could use regular nuts, but would have to hold them with a socket or a wrench. Across the top of the windshield there are about 6 sheet metal screws.

You have to remove all of your soft top hardware. You should be able to use the same hardware that attached the side rails on your soft top to attach the sides of the hardtop. Sheet metal screws attach the hard top to the windshield. Do you have doors that will work with the hardtop?

I have factory half doors and I recently bought the upper half sliding windows. I hope that is going to work.

I wish I could find a hard top for $300 bucks.... Sure would come in handy when we get all that lake effect snow... If anyone has an older hard top, or knows someone that does in the NW Pennsylvania area, I'd be willing to drive for it..... BTW my Jeep is a '94 YJ Sahara..

Some upper half sliding windows only work with the factory soft top. If you have a factory soft top and the sliding uppers work with it, I don't think they will work with the hard top. Hardtops are designed to work with the full steel doors and require a door that has a rounded (as opposed to sharp) upper rear corner. I think some companies make upper sliders that will work with the hardtop, so you'll have to figure out what you have.

I think you will be hardpressed to fit those doors with the hardtop. I was under the impression (I could be wrong, it has happened many times) that the upper sliders only worked with the soft top. Full steel doors could come with a hefty price tag, but you did get lucky with the hardtop.
An option could be keeping the soft top with the sliders and get an insulated lining for the soft top. California Tops out of Edmonton, Alberta (403) 435-8911 price is $200 Canadian (which is about $10 US/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif). If this is an option for you I'm sure you would have no problem getting rid of the hardtop and be able to pocket a couple of loonies (Canadian currency $1 coin/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Speaking of soft doors with a hard top.......

I called Bestop to see if they made any soft doors that work with hard tops and I was told "no". I can't beleive somebody hasn't cashed in on that. Hard tops last forever, but the hard doors rust out so fast......I have a hard top for my CJ, but the doors are pretty shabby, and I won't (can't) pay the price for new ones. I put my soft top on this past week-end and the hard top is hanging in the barn waiting for me to decide what to do.
