Any suggestions on an easy way to lift the hard top off of my 73 commando? I have already removed all of the bolts. I am wondering about possible hoist set-ups or any other way other than brut strength. Also, are there any do's & don'ts with reguards to positioning the top while it is off. I was wondering about leaning it against the wall in my garage;on it's backend

I put four eyelets in ceiling of my garage. Then went to the hardware store and bought one of those packs of four tiedown straps. I hooked them under the edge of the top and pulled up a little at a time on each one. Works great and is simple.

I backed the Jeepster to where I wanted to hang the top, lifted one end at a time (the top), and slid a 2X4 under it. Tied ropes to the 2X4's (on each end sticking out) and looped them over a rafter. Lifted straight up one at a time. Mine only hangs 6 inches off the rig though. If you are lifting higher, once you loop the ropes over a rafter, you could tie them together and pull both sides of front or back at once. I was only going to hang it for the summer months, but that was 4 years ago! Soft tops RULE!

I took my top off this past weekend. Four people, one per corner was very easy. I think two would have worked. The only suggestion I read here was that you could tie a cord around the base of the top (through the passenger windows and around the liftgate) so that the top would not spring or flex out. This makes putting it back on much easier.

I used a 2" pipe frame and a clevis located at the center of the weight distribution. I had a clamp on type roof rack(locks to the gutters)and after slipping the pipe rack under the rails on the rack, hooked a come-a-long to a clevis on the rafters and ratcheted that puppy up! It hangs just high enough in the shop that my wife and I both look like we've been in a rock fight from running into it at face height!

I put a block and tackle up in the peak of my barn. To hook to the back of the top, I cut a 2x4 a little longer than the width of the rear door, and slid it under the back posts where the rear door closes. Hooked a rope on both ends of the 2x4 and let it rope come out the sides of the rear door. Looped a rope around the front and connected both in the center and to the B&T. Had to make some adjustments so that it would lift level, but it worked great. The rope in the back wedges the rear door open, but causes no problems. Use the riding lawnmower to lift it about 20 feet, and tied it off. For some reason the push lawnmower didn't have enough power to move the top. Maybe I wasn't pushing hard enough.

You could bolt the 2x4 to the back posts, but it works fine with the weight of the top holding it in place.

If I was clever, I'd find a way to tie the B&T to the bumper and have the Jeepster lift the the top as I drove forward, in one motion.
