I just got some ads in the mail from Harbor Freight. I've yet to buy anything from them, but they've got some deals...I think.

How's a Chicago Electric 1/2" reversible hammer drill for $40 sound? Most of the items they've got are same or similar brand and price relative to "market."

I've bought a few things from them in the past. It's OK for the backyard mechanic but the pro's would trash the stuff in no time at all. The hammer drill sound like a deal to me. It should last for years with occassional use.

I just bought a battery operated Chicago reversable electric drill from them and so far it works fine, but I have to agree with RickB if I were a professional it just wouldn't stand up to the job.

I have a 4 1/2" grinder from them. I give it hell all the time. It has common relaceable brushes in it. I put a set in a few years ago and good as new. My old boss bought 2 of these after burning up a sears and a dewalt. He never had a problem as long as I worked there.It was worth all the whopping $29 I paid for it.

I wouldn't trust ANY electric hammer drill except the commercial grade names. These things have some pretty massive centrifugal force bashing two peices of metal against each other to creat the "hammer" effect. If the metal is cheap, you won't be using the drill too long. IMHO save your money for better quality. You've got to becareful about what you buy. Sometimes cheap is good, but sometimes it describes the quality, not the price.

Dirtdog, I love my HF grinder too! It is funny, because it sometimes won't run when you tilt it. All it takes is a little tweak on the brushes and it is off and running again. Sure it doesn't sound as smooth as a Milwaukee or a Makita, but I can buy four grinders at Harbor Freight for the price of one Makita.

What about the Harbor Freight/Chicago Electric Winch? Anyone here using that?
I was wondering how it was holding up if anyone has bought one. It seems like a
good deal for under $300. To me it looks almost identical to a Ramsey REP8000.
Any thoughts on this winch?

I've got that same grinder,as well as a chop saw and for my uses it has been fine. I haven't had to replace the brushes yet either. If I did metal fabbing for a living I would probably spend the cash to get a "good" one. For what I do though the chicago electric brand has worked well for me.

i just bought a ton of tools from them. IR impact wrench and sockets, IR air compressor, but everything else is Habor frieght brand: air grinder, drill, tap and die, drill bits, impact sockets, and tool chest. I figured i really need a great compresser and a great impact wrench sice i would be using them the most. But everything i figured i would only use every now and then. You cant beat the prices on some of that stuff. 25$ for a reversable 1800 rmp air drill? I can burn that out 6 times before i have equaled the price of the cheapest IR reversable drill!

BTW the free shipping they give everyone sucks! I have to unload the air compressor from the truck 3 weeks after i ordered it and the rest of the stuff came by mail (not UPS) two weeks later. I guess its what you get for free./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Sold the CJ... Cant wait for the next time around!
