I'm toying with the idea of installing a hand throttle for slow speed crawling. On a scale of 1-10, I'd rate my mechanical prowess at about a 7. How hard is it to rig into the fuel injection? I know almost nothing about electrical/FI...

Does any one have schematics/write ups? Estimated cost or after market recommendations are also appreciated.

Danke!

It isn't an "electrical" deal. It's purely mechanical. Get a bicycle gear shift lever and cable. Hook it to lever where the foot throttle hooks up on the throttle body. Put the gear shift lever on your Jeep gear shift lever and you are in business. Costs about $10 and can be done in a half hour or so. Keep in mind this is a HAND throttle NOT a cruise control. Works great on the trail. Rubicon Express, I think, sells this setup for about $19.95 or $24.95 or some such number. And it is nothing but the above mentioned bicycle gear shift lever, but it does have installation instructions. If you are unsure of how to do it, the directions might be worth the extra few dollars.

I have the Rubicon Express hand throttle and it is nothing more than a bike gear shift cable and lever. Easy to install andI have a 4.0 in my CJ. Just hooks around the the spot where cruise control would go. They supplied all the necessary hardware. I am sure you could duplicate it on your own.

I have a question about this hand throttle thing. I get the basic concept of the whole thing and and idea about how to hook it up. What I was wondering about is this, You wont get very much "pull" on the lever do to it's limited travel. What about rigging up some kind a lever along the same lines as the gear shift or bake lever, but incorporating a cam type pulley to get more lever travel? I mean cam as in on a compound bow. If done right, it could look pretty high tech. Everybody would wonder what it is so it could be a conversation starter and a great way to meet new people. Face it, car/jeep guys are alway looking for high tech gadgets for their rides.

You get enough throttle travel with the bike gear shift lever. From idle rpms to pretty close to wide open. The gear shift lever can be adjusted with a thumb screw so that it remains set or it can be loosened so that it is self cancelling. I use it all the time on the highway. Even in town if I need to move my throttle foot for some reason, I use the hand throttle, but then I grew up on hand throttles - farm tractors, old cars, aircraft, motorcycles and a few 18 wheelers with "hand operated cruise control".
Don't want to hear how dangerous it is. Well over a million miles using a hand throttle - legal or not - dangerous or not, NO ACCIDENTS as a result and will continue to use my hand throttle.

Hey 94,
If you piece your own kit together, just be sure you get a shift cable for a tandem--the regular length is short by a few inches (isn't everything/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif). Piecing it together on your own saves only a few bucks (shifter=$5, cable=$2, cable housing=$8, misc parts=$5). If I did it again, I would just pony up the $25 for the RE kit and save the hassles. Install is a piece of cake and won't take more than an hour. I don't use it for trail crawling, but like idling up to 2,000rpm's and locking it in for winching and also in those pucker situations when you need a third foot. Oh yeah, and it's just fun to use it to rev your engine at stop lights around town/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif.

I found it simpler to connect the cable to the top of the pivot arm for the gas pedal, under the dash. A very short cable is all that is then required.

Just for your info, someone on the Toy PU board a while back had explicit instructions on doing this if you want to do a search of
that board. I believe it even had drawings or something, but it was very well done.

I made mine with a bike brake lever and integrated STI gear shifter. Deore LX I believe. Hooked both of them up to the carb. with cables you can buy at the bike shop in lengths up to about 6'. The gear shifter is operated by a cam that reaches full throttle in about six clicks, and I get about 3/4 throttle out of the brake lever. Cost about 15 bucks for the used shifter and new cables.
