hand throttle

I've been thinking about putting a hand throttle on my jeep. From what I could see in the ads it looks basicaly like the hand brake off of a bike hooked up to the throttle cable. This all seems pretty straight forward, but how do you compensate for moving the shifter? Won't that alternatly pull on the throttle when in the gears that require pulling the stick back and excess slack in the gears you push forward? Just playing with some ideas

Nope. When you move the shifter it isnt 'pulling' on the hand throttle cable. Yes, you are moving the cable but this is entirally different than the pulling action of the lever. You will see what I mean when you install one but trust me on this.

A hand throttle is a great thing! I just added one to my jeep about a week ago and I cant imagine how I got by without one in the past. I've been Jeepn the every one of the past 3 days and I used the thing approx. 85% of the time offroad.

Nope. As long as you route the housing without any sharp bends or kinks you'll be fine. Think about a mountain bike shifter on the bike--when you turn the handle bar, you don't get shifter input. As long as the housing length and cable tension is constant, there won't be input. Also, use a shift lever instead of a brake lever so you can lock it at a set RPM for winching, etc... It cost me about $12 to round up the parts at a bike shop. Make sure you get a shift cable for a tandem or it will be too short.

hold on a sec, does this make sense, since u can kind of set the "bike switch" to any position to raise the RPM's doesn't it make it like a cheap cruise control while your driving?

Yup. Not recommended for on road use, only trained professionals should use, blah blah blah blah blah.../wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif About "Oaklahoma Cruise Control". (bike shifter hand throttle) There are two things that you need to understand...one is that there is no compensation for uphill-downhill...the Jeep will gain speed or lose speed depending on the terrain;.......two..there is no instant disengage for emergencies. Those of us who grew up on hand-clutch farm tractors have all hit SOMETHING because we couldn't snap the clutch out fast enough.....it's the same thing here with the hand throttle. Hand throttles are a trail assist, strictly, unless you leave it loose and hold it all the time./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I'm afraid what has happened here is that you asked what time it was and we told you how to build a clock. To answer the question about the cable pulling when the shifter is moved: The cable jacket is attached to the shift lever with tie wraps and goes straight down till it nears the floor. The cable jacket curves to align with the floor and then goes up the firewall to a point where it is possible to anchor it, and the inner cable is set up to pull on the throttle linkage. So you see, no amount of movement of the shift lever will change anything./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Hey,this hand throttle sounds like a really good idea. I've got a couple questions about it though. Will the regular gas pedal still be functional? If so,how do I hook up the hand throttle and still leave the gas pedal hooked up?
I've got the Weber 32/36.
Thanks,

I just did a hand throttle a few weeks ago. Same here, $12 at a bike shop got me a pair of hand shift levers. One with a friction screw (that's the one I used) and one with click stops (haven't figured out what to use that one for yet/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif) . However, I used a very short cable-- I terminated the sheath under the vent duct in my CJ, ran the cable through a small hole I drilled in the accelerator pedal arm (above the pivot), and put a small (1/16 dia-- model airplane shop stuff) shaft collar on the back side. When the hand throttle is at idle the gas pedal works normally; the cable just slides in the hole. Easier than running it through the firewall to the carb, and works much more smoothly, since there's less cable length causing friction.

hey, just wanted to say thanks! I'm gonna build one this weekend. I've got a shifter lever with a brake handle eboxied to it which should work well. I'll tell ya'll how it works

Hey CJDave, what do you mean we've all hit something with a hand clutch tractor? You didn't see me hit anything. I don't know anything about the Cedarstrom's fence. Wasn't me. Besides, I fixed it. I AM BEING FRAMED!!!

also, a chain can be hooked from the hand throttle cable to the throttle arm to allow a foot override.
