I'm in the process of pulling my 258 and installing a 304. In the 304 that I got the driver side aft freeze plug was leaking so I pulled it out and found a bunch of gunk behind it. Now I've never done any kind of engine work before so I don't have any experience with what should/should not, might/might not, could or could not be behind a freeze plug. And with all that said, is this something I need to worry about or do I just clean it up and install a new plug and go on my way. I know it's a used engine (supposed to have less than 60,000 miles), and I don't expect it to last forever. I just don't want it to blow up with in the first week after installing it.

Well, I just talked to a buddy of mine and he said it to pull the other plugs, run a hose through it and put new plugs in and it should be fine. Guess I'll see if he's right.
