After all of the discussion about the dwindling places to legally go wheeling, especially in the eastern US, I started thinking... What if 20 or 30 guys pooled money together to buy a large track of land? Would it be possible for a 4x4 club to own a 100+ acre property, reserved for members to enjoy? (kind of like a hunting club?)

I started searching on the internet, and I found one example of this being tried. http://www.neow.org/newtrails.html

Don't forget to check for any land use laws. just because you own it doesn't mean you can do anything...

here's a thought. See if you can find an old closed quarry. I'd think almost ANY use would be better than
letting the scars show. You could even do some restoration by blasting some of the hard rock and
contracting with the local yard waste recyclers for dumping their seasonal surplus and planting trees.
Land would probably be cheap too.

The ORV park the melt is held at is an old quarry, so it has been done.

Someone tried that out here, They bought some land and built a motocross track. Everything was fine until the tree huggers found out and had the county close it for a enviromental impact study.

That's another reason I'm saving to buy myself 80 to 100 acres here in NC in a few years. One of our clients just bought 300 acres near Fayetteville for $1,100/acre, so I know it can be done! I've been heavily investing every spare dollar I have and watching the pot slowly grow... Yep, I'll hunt it, 4-wheel it, fish it, lease some to farmers, etc... I have a feeling that NJ land is a bit more than $1,100/acre though!!

a good friend of mine lives several hours north of minneapolis and he bought a ton of land to use as his own off-road area and motocross track since there are really no ORV areas in the state for trucks to go. well wouldn't you know it but in the past few years rich lawyers and doctors started moving up there to get out the metro area and they didn't like the loud trucks and dirtbikes and got the entire area re-zoned and made all the land part of a little dinky town. now you can't do anything at all. the rich fat bastards buy their way to what ever they want so watch out.

You can buy mountainous acreage in upstate NY, primarily in the Adirondack or Catskill mountains, for under $1000 an acre.

My dad and I are both considering selling and moving north (too many city folk moving up here and spoiling the counrty life). Between the 2 properties, we could net over a million. With that kinda money upstate, we could buy a 300+ acre maple farm. My dad really wants to do this, because if we jointly own the land, no inheretance tax when he passes on.

If so, I will be hosting Zook events in my back yard.

out here I don't think many of the hunting clubs even own the land. they lease it.

I do know there is an off road motorcycle club here in pa that leases land to ride on. their annual dues are reasonable even. so I guess if you find the right landowner leasing could be an option also.

Here in the eastern part of western PA, there's some place called "wesco" or "westco" or something like that that a friend belongs to. He took me there once -- it's a private club that he pays dues to and he gets the use of the land whenever he wants .... I don't think it's primarily for four-wheel drive, but there are plenty of Jeep, quad and dirtbike trails there when the mood strikes. I think it's primary use is for large outdoor parties, camping, hunting and the like. There's a largish cabin with refrigerators, stoves and sleeping quarters. When we went, we drove up, unlocked this huge gate and spent hours on the trails there. I'm not sure how many acres, but it was a good time. I did an internet search but couldn't come up with anything .... sorry. It can be done, though.
