I have a 79 CJ7 in need of a new steering column. I know about the neat one offered by centech but had also heard Jeep used GM columns for awhile and they bolt in. Does anyone know a GM column will fit a 79? Also, if so, what years and models of GM should I look for in the salvage? I need a column without any automatic tran stuff on it. any help would be appreciated. thanks!

My 85 uses a GM ignition lock, I believe the column is probably also GM.

My 1980 CJ7 uses a tilt column from a 1980's Camaro with a manual transmission supposedly, but the column in my sub appears to be the same. You need a column with a round housing. Also you need a steering shaft to connect it to the stock steering box. You can make one, but I recommend a shaft from Borgeson; they make a great product and are very helpfull when custom making a shaft. Mine is a Jeep replacement shaft with a GM to Jeep conversion joint on top and I added a vibration dampener on the bottom; it smoothes the steering out.

Ya, I believe they are GM, but I can't give you interchange info. You could check other AMC vehicles as well. I pulled a column out of a '76 AMC Pacer that looks just like my '77 CJ column and appears to be the right length. This one is out of a Pacer X and even has the same spoked steering wheel (it just says AMC on the center section rather than Jeep.
