gear swap 4.10s to 4.56 or 4.88

If I decide to swap gears, I know I don't need a carrier change but can you just reuse the old shims or do you have to shim it differently for different gears? I have access to a shop and a lift but I want to know what else I need. I've ripped a diff apart before but never changed the gears. The kit I'm looking at includes new bearings and shims but are they necessary? Thanks a ton,

Nick, I thought that the 4.88's weren't out yet. Or are these going into some non-OEM axle's?

These are OEM axles, my question is for future reference. If I decide to go with the 4.88s, I have to wait til december for them to come out.

Nick, don't forget that the higher numerically you go the weaker the gears due to pinion to ring gear contact and things like that. In doing the diff I just installed the Detroit Locker in I was told by several reputable mechanics (including a college auto instructor) that you could reuse the shims just as long as they aren't galled or scored.

Yeah but my 4 banger doesn't have a lot of power and I'm not a real lead foot when off-roading. I don't think I'd break em.

I'm not real knowledgeable about jeep tech, but I'm sure you would be happy with the 4.10 or 4.56. Your factory gears are probably around 3.50 or less right? going to 4.10 is a big step, but 4.56's could be good also

G
FYI A wrangler 4 banger comes with 4.10 gears.

4.10 to 4.56 is not a huge jump, I would wait for the deeper gears, you can reuse shims but why bother? they come new with a setup kit. seting up diffs is not hard but it is detail work, lots of time spent measuring, whatever you do resist the urge to say "ahh good enough" make sure all your clearances are right on, that way the gears will live a long and happy life.

4:88's are out and only sold by one company. I am not sure but i think it maybe the company called SUPERIOR. I remember that they were the only ones that sold them because it was part of there ad. LOL check them out

Good Luck

I'd recommend the install kit. That way there is a high probability that you will have all needed parts on hand. These kits also usually come with a little tube of gear blue. If you don't get it and happen to need a shim size not used in your diff originally or need more shims, then what ya gonna do? Besides, replacing the bearings now wouldn't hurt. While you got the diffs all tore up, you might want to consider swapping in some lockers/limited slips. Much easier to do this all in one shot, but it does significantly raise the cost of the project.

If there is any chance you want to add a locker, now is the time. Otherwise, you will have to get the old ring gear of the carier which may require a press. Plus, putting in the locker the same time you do gears is only one setup. If you add a locker later, you have to do it all over. As we speak I am adding an ARB and 4.10 gears. So far the hardest part was getting the old pinion out of the diff. My diff wouldn't fit in the press so I had to rig up somthing using a steel table and a hand hydraulic jack. The other hard part is getting my old spring perches off. I figure I can get about 1/2" of lift by doing away with the wedge shims....and get my driveline angle closer to what I want.

One last thing. If you have the AMC 20, replace the old flanged axles. I am also installing the Superior one piece solid axles. One of my old axles was on verge of spinning. The spline on the hub was already striped. The key was the only thing holding it. The Superior kit has everything you need and there is no shimming required. Nice setup.
