After going from stock tires to 33's I'm ready for a gear change. My question is is it possible to change the rear gearing without changing the front? I can imagine the impact if running 4HI on the hiway at 50mph, but what about 1-2 mph on dirt/rocks/etc?

NO, you will bind up the T/C for sure.
I ran 4:56 in the front with 3:50 in the rear one time. I swapped out my rear 3rd memeber (9")for a long highway ride (wanted lower RPM's on the highway) I didn't think I was going to do any wheeling, but some how I found sand. I tried puting it in 4 low. It went in with no problem and I was able to run it (when I got stuck) But I can tell you the T/C was binding. Being in sand helped a lot.
