Hi all,

Can anyone explain about liquid-filled gauges/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. Does actually have liquid in them?/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gifDoes this mean that I can mount them on the exterior of the vehicle and are they waterproof?/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Well it stands to reason that they would be waterproof or they wouldnt be liquid filled for very long. I thought that it was just a vibration dampening feature.

Well, something that is waterproof on the inside, it ain't necessarly waterproof on the outside. There are a couple of ways of making a dampered meter moement for a meter. The whole meter movement is submerged in a clear oil, or the meter movement is on the outside...with only the needle moving thorough the dampening liquid. Though the meter is manufactured to contain the dampening fluid it is far from waterproof.

I know,
The waterproof thing was just a litte humor, while anxiousely awaiting all the technical jargon. But in the past, we did run liquid filled gauges in my drag boat, and they were waterproof, (but I liked em cause they were very stable under the high vibration conditions).

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif when I was a kid I used to take dash gauges out of WWII army trucks to use on my tractor because they were waterproof. There was no provision for illumination except a stand-off with the lamp in it that was positioned between two two gauges, one lamp for each pair./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
