Gas tank replacement

I've just found a possible replacement for the very scary arrangement that was in Moe when I got him. I used to have a 5 gallon tank sitting behind the back seat with a line running to the fuel pump. You had to open the tailgate in order to fill up. And the cap on it didn't fit properly--it always smelled like gasoline in the car
.
I spent about a week contacting all the junk yards near here and noone was at all helpful. The Jeep dealership (yes I know-bad idea) was equally unhelpful.

Anyway-I ended up taking measurements of the space and walking around a junkyard for about an hour and a half. Turns out that the tank from an 82 Lebaron fits just perfectly. I had to fab up a block to keep the thing horizontal on the passenger side, but it seems to work fine.

Next project-make the fuel guage work...and the blinkers and the reverse lights and the seatbelts..........

paintcharge, just curious, but why would you want the gas tank in the cab with you ( fumes ,spills, leaks , and takes up good storage and or toteing space)? You know there are companies that make the original 14 gallon tank for $69.00 Madjohn.

Andy , The company is National Automotive Lines, Inc. Shelbyville, Indiana. 1-800-428-4300 The part # for the tank which is exact fit ,for 73 anyway, is JP-1A and with shipping and all total was only $81.67 .They do not have sending units but Specialty Parts in CA. has the exact replacement unit which with shipping only cost $39.78 1-800-504-5337.

I believe the only difference is whether the fill inlet is on the rear or side of the tank. The older models, 68 and below, are rear and all later are side inlet. Either tank fits physically, the difference is the routing of the filler tube. Either can be made to fit with some ingenuity.
