assuming your fuel gauge is inaccurate, do you know whether the tank is 15 or 20 gallon? recently purchased 87 yj took nearly 15 gals but the gauge read approx 1/4 tank. either i almost ran out and gauge is off or i've got an opptional 20 gal.

Not sure that I fully understand the question...but let me try...you had a 1/4 tank, on the gauge, and put in approx 15 gallons to fill it up??? well, since 5 more gallons equals 1/4 of 20 then maybe your gauge is correct and you have a 20 gallon tank. I would assume the gauge is correct.

your math is correct jeepster! i was wondering if the tank was marked with a code or number for capacity or some other trick method of determining size without purposely running out to solve. i question the gauge until proven correct.
thanks

Got it Steve...not trying to insult your intelligence...just want to hit the easy stuff first. I'm not sure if there is a code or someother identifying mark like a code...maybe someone else does. What makes you assume the gauge is incorrect again?

no offense taken!
the guage might be correct and i guess time will tell. it's no big deal. the gauge stays at full for a long time then drops off at a normal rate. this is notorious of a lot of gauges. if this was my only problem i would be sittin fat.

Here's a suggestion.

Check your gas mileage for a few tanks. Then calculate how many miles you should be able to go on about 18 gallons. Then run that many miles without filling up. Or you can stretch each tankfull a little further till you satisfied what size tank you have.

You can carry an emergency gallon of gas if you want, but I don't feel comfortable carrying gas around with me.
