I have an 85 CJ-7 with 258 and HEI and a non BBD Carter carb. I just had to replace the fuel pump and now the Carter runs very rich with black smoke most of the time. I think the pressure from the new pump is too much for the Carter. Any ideas what the fuel pressure should be, and if I need a regulator where to buy an inexpensive one? The 258 was running great with lots of power until I put the new pump on, now its a dog.

Thanks for any help..

6-9 is a little high. Per spec it should be 3-5 PSI. Make sure you measure it at the fuel pump. The fuel filter has a return to the gas tank so the pressure there is low.

I had the same problem the last time I rebuilt the carb. You can take just the top off and see where the fuel level is. It's not that hard to addjust....just bend the float tab a little and re-try. Just out of curiosity?....was the Carter put on recently?
