Fuel pressure regulator?

I have a starting issue with my '98 grand 4.0. The first time I crank the motor it will not start. Second time it fires right up. I was told that this can be a symtom of the pressure reg. I went to the dealer and pick up a OE reg. and it's the one that mounts on the outside of the tank right on top of the fuel pump. It has a nipple on top for a vacumm line, and a lower nipple with a o-ring that looks like it inserts into the top of the pump. Has anyone installed one of these? Do I need to drop the tank, or can I reach if I have it on a lift?

Thanks... jer

I'm not sure about your question,BUT before you change that reg try swaping the fuel pump relay with one of the others of the same type in the fuse block under the hood and see if that changes your situation. Also the CPS has been known to cause greef in older jeeps.

I bought a CPS, but then after taking a look, relized that no human could reach there arm back around there to get at the bolt. I returned it. Don't think that was it anywho, Truck starts and runs fine after some "priming" with the starter. Fuel pressure, or I have heard a mith about the built in safty feature that makes you "crank up" the oil pressure before it will fire. Again, I remember havin a similar issue with my '91, but only after high miles.

You have an electric fuel pump. You shouldn't have to crank it to prime (assuming that is your prob) anything. Your fuel pump should start when you turn the key to the run position or whatever you call the spot just before the engine cranks. If it is not doing that you don't have a regulator prob. Could be a relay, could be something else.

So the pump does run when the key is "on" but the engine is not cranking? If that's the case it should be easy enough to test. There is a mith floating around that the computer has a safty feature that keeps the engine from firing right off the bat to let the oil get pumped into motor. Anthor mith along the same lines is that the hydro lifters need to be "pumped up" before the engine will fire up. A number of other folks have had the same prob., but it never seems to be a "real" problem.

turn the key on the pump runs comes up to preasure and shuts off System should be primed and ready! You should be able to hear rhe pump run!If it dosent there is a relay ,elctrical problem or a pump failure.

O yes, it can be done. Do a search. It's discussed here lots of times. It solves many problems.

As for the myths: these engines crank over for some time. It's what they do. They should however fire up after 5 seconds or so. See also this
