Yea.. the smoking lamp is out !!!

Try Radio shack part # RSU 11344561... buys ya a 5 pack of 20 ohm resistors...(about 59c) throw one away.. twist the other 4 in a string... ya with me here????

connect the whole shootin match between the wire you remove from the sender screw on the top of the tank and a GOOD ground.. preferably the ground your using for the tank.. all together is 80ohms (max resistance=minimum current flow=minimum meter deflection) move the sender wire to the center of the string of 4 and you should get half tank indication... pure rocket science..

Whats wrong with it?
Doesn't work at all?
Works great some times?
Works up to 1/2 tank?
Doesn't read correctly?
Does the Temp guage work?
Whats the history?

All the other gauges are working. It used to read poorly - like a quarter tank when full. Now it doesn't read at all. I don't understand the hook them in a string method the first person is talking about. Is anyone clear on the tracing the correct wire(s) from the tank to the harness. I think that is the issue.

What he was talking about is how to test the guage and wiring from the tank end. He suggests using 4 resistors inline with the last one connected to ground. Then by touching the wire that used to be hooked up to your sending unit to different parts of the 'string' of resistors, your guage should show 1/2, empty etc.
I think thats a safe way of doing it.
I have done it this way.
Take the wire off the sending unit and momentarily touch it to ground. The guage, if good, should go to full, if it doesn't, suspect the wiring or guage. If it does go to full, the sending unit is bad.
It sometimes takes a couple of seconds to make this happen, best done with two people so you don't leave it on too long and blow the guage.
