FSJ springs - help ??

I am putting FSJ axles under my Jeepster, and of course no one makes lift springs for it. I am moving the front springs outboard of the frame for the Dana 44. But my real question is what are the spring dimensions for the FSJ's. My front axle came out of a 78 Wagoneer and the rear springs on that truck measured 56" long and 2-1/2" wide but I could not tell if these have a centered or offset tie bolt. I also measureed an early J-10 rear springs that were 55" long with an offset (33/22?) tie bolt that I might can make work on the front. The Jeepster rear springs are also 56" long x 2-1/2 wide, centered tie bolt, but are flat. I am also interested in the dimensions on the front springs. Do they vary from year to year, or application to application? Could someone clear up the muddy water for me.

The rear springs on my '75 Cherokee are 52" long from center to center of the eyes. the spring center bolt is centered. My '79 is 58" with a 27" from the front centerbolt. The frames were redesigned in '76, so that accounts for the difference. My '75 J-10 is the same as the '75 cherokee. I measured along the curve of the springs, not straight across. both '75's are lifted with aftermarket front springs, so those might not be relevant measurements if you are looking for stock springs. the widths are 2 1/2" like the rear. They won't fit the jeepster front (pre-72) unless you change the spring hangers. The '79 fronts are 49" with a 27" from the front centerbolt. this should be the same as the '78.
I've never thought of using FSJ springs on a jeepster. I never checked the dimensions. Water cleared up a little bit?

all OE springs of FSJs from 74 on have offset tie bolts. the 63-73 OE springs have centered tie bolts.

since u r installing the fronts outboard of the frame, than u can use lifted 74-91 springs from the major companies and then bolt them on ur d44 and then place the spring-eyes on the frame when u have centered ur tire in the wheel well.

check out my site

it dont deal with C101s, but it uses the 63-73 centered springs...

Kenny, I may be wrong, but is '76 when the springs were changed to the offset bolt? The frames underwent a major design overhaul this model year and the spring mounts were beefed up and relocated. My '75 has a center bolt and its the stock spring with a liftblock under it. I've looked under the chassis of many FSJ's pre-76 , mostly wagoneers, and the chassis look the same to '76. Some liftkits I've seen say they fit '74 and up and some are '76 and up, so I don't know what was changed in what year. I'm going by my vehicles. Now I'm confused. later

for the 74 model year, the wag cherokee springs grew by 1.5". the wheelbase shrunk by 1". on ur 75. are the rear spring anchors consisting of a welded on box, or a pin rivited to the side of the frame rail? when u measured the 75 springs, did u measure the rear springs the front or both?

My '75 has the pin with 4 rivets, so does the truck. The '79 has the boxed spring hanger. I measured just the rears on both '75's because they have lifted aftermarket springs on the front. te '79 has stock springs all around. I guess if they made subtle changes during production, it would be hard to spot them, especially an inch difference in the springs. What's the proper way to determine the spring length? I measured fron center to center of the spring mounting eyes, following the curve of the spring. Thanks

Correction, as I discovered today taking out the rear axle the Jeepster rear springs DO have an offset tie bolt 23"/32" approx. I was measuring the 56" from spring eye to eye straight across
OK the 79 fronts springs might just work 49" long with 27/22 offset since the stock C101 front springs are 46 " long with a 21/25 offset. I'd just have to flip them around. Since I am having to make new spring mounts anyhow I can put them where ever I need them.
Since the stock springs are flat and I am going to do a spring over any arched spring will give me some extra lift. If I can play mix and match with stock springs which are abundant in junk yards and cheap then why buy custom made lift springs? What I really need is a spring spec book that the local spring shops have.

Re: FSJ springs - help ??hey Chris!

Hey Chris, Would you mind measuring those front lift springs on your 75 for me? I am still "investigating" what springs I am going to use.

Re: FSJ springs - help ??hey Chris!

Thanks for doing that but the offset is too much. the 49" front springs from the 79 might work for what I am doing but I found someone who has used the Toyota springs for this conversion that I have been saying for months would probably work. I am trying to get ahold of him to find out how they are holding up. Toyota rear spring 79-80ish are only 1" longer than the stock springs I have, are 2.66 inches wide, and the same offset to the rear but have half the spring rate. That is why I was trying to use Jeep springs. Since I am useing a Wagoneer front axle if I can make FSJ springs work it would take half of the work out of it. I am a lazy modifier if I can sit here and find a way to make it work before I pick up the welder and torches I can shorten the trial and error part.

Re: FSJ springs - help ??hey Chris!

I heard about the toyota springs on the jeepster. I'm surprised no one on teh board asked for the details. I'm guessing the toy springs are metric, that's why there over 2 1/2". I have an old set of mono-leaf springs from a parted jeepster and I was thinking of adding a leaf pack to it. don't know if it will work but a spring that is close to the dimensions minus the leaf with the eyes may work. theres a bunch of different make trucks at the pick-n-pull here with all kinds of different spring lengths that are 2 1/2" that may work.

Re: FSJ springs - help ?? Thanks for the help>

I am supposed to get a set of Skyjacker Toyota main leafs from a friend and can have the pack built up with an add a leaf fairly cheap. I guess I will either use those or a set of the 79 FSJ springs up front. I still have to find something to work in the rear. I may just get a set of add a leafs for the back and have new ones built later. I just hate to pay the price for custom springs. Something in a junk yard is bound to be close. I'll keep looking. Thanks again for all your help.
