Frame painting with POR-15...

1279 Views 4 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  **DONOTDELETE**
Ok...need some advice.
I'm going to cover the rear portion of my CJ-7 frame with POR-15 since it has some rust on it. My question is, when painting(spray paint rattle cans) over POR-15, should I use a primer ontop of the POR-15, or can I spray the final color right over the POR-15? I know that I have to spray paint before the POR-15 is dry, so I have that part covered. I just need to know if I need a primer or not. Thanks,

According to the company you should use a primer while it is still wet. Of course they recommend their "Tie Coat" primer which can be painted on after the POR-15 is dry. On my truck I POR-15 the frame then went over it with undercoating. No problems since and the was 7 years ago. My CJ is getting a little nicer treatment. Sanblasted frame, Por-15, Tie coat primer then a topcoat of gloss black enamel.

Did it go together nice and easy? You did something wrong. Will have to do it again./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Hey Dan. I think you can do it either way... I've done both with good success.

If you happen to let it dry before top coating it, you have 2 options:

PORs Tie-Coat primer or

scuffing the surface to remove the shine then painting over it.

Pressure wash it then let it dry for a few days. I undercoated the inside of my frame. I got a undercoating gun from JC Whitney for $36 and with the flexible wand that comes with it, I stuck it in every hole I could and at every angle possible. As far as I can see I got it completely covered.
