Does anyone know what number Fram Oil Filter I need to use for my '83 CJ-7 I6? I tried to look it up in the Wal-Marts computer but it wasn't in the system, and they didn't have a book.
Thanks
Fram has recently changed thier filters. I read an article which discribed problems I was having with my Fram. The new design does not have a effective check valve. I also had trouble getting it to seat without leaking. I've always used Fram, but I think I'll try something else next change. The article, which I read on this site, reccomended several filters. I can't think of them all, but Puralator, NAPA Gold, Motorcraft and Wix come to mind. I might try a K&N to match my airfilter.
Good jeepin
PS. The problem with a poor check valve is that the oil drains back to the pan, when you start up the engine the valves rattle like crazy.
I read that article some time ago and I will never purchase a Fram filter again. I have an AC-Delco filter on now as it received a good rating for everyday, off-the-shelf filters.
That article on filters is fascinating. A must read for everyone, really made me think about what the media blitz has done and what
I have done to my engines over the years! /wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif

I am really curious to find out how the K&N oil filters perform. Advance Auto just started carrying them, and I thought I would give
them a try. They better be good for $10.

I have a friend who manages a Napa store. He recently attended a seminar, put on by Napa. One of the subjects was oil filters. They were shown a cutaway of both the Napa silver and gold oil filters. The gold filter had more than twice the filter media, and of higher quality, than the silver. So for a couple dollars more, I would go with the gold filter.
/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Erk! Does anyone out there want a Fram # 3429 filter? I'll send this one to you free. It is leftover from my '85 Caddy 4.0 . There is hardly anything so emotionally connected to the American driveway mechanic as motor oil brands, and filter makes. Here I thought I was being a real sleuth when I found a bigger filter for the 4.0 Jeep engine (PH8A); little did I know, I should have been asking for the NAPA GOLD filter since I was right there in th estore./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif I always used the big two-quart NAPA on my Small Block Chev in my 3/4 ton GMC. It had enough ground clearance to do that./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif
If you take what that article said, we should all be using Purolator Pure One filters. But, one thing, where do you find them? /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif
