Found this cool thing-what can I do with it?

I found this in the junk yard today. It's 1/2 inch thick steel-heavy-probably 20-25 pounds. Painted yellow-looks like something taken off a bulldozer(or something similar). The middle piece swings on a shaft-it has a grease fitting on the backside of the shaft. The bottom has six holes for mounting. It was too cool to leave it but what can I make out of it? Mount it to the bumper for a place to pull from or maybe make a tire carrier mount out of it? give me some ideas.

I don't know, but it looks like it would make a nice offroad hitch to pull a trailer with. I don't know how big that hole is for a ball, but if you mounted it to your rear bumper it seems like it would do a nice job, esp. on steep changes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it seems like it would work like a pintle (sp?) setup but still using the traditional ball.

I thought about putting a ball in the hole-it is big enough-but the peice swings so you really couldn't put any weight on it. I guess if the hitch will stay clamped on the ball-it will just swing down as far as it can-it could work...

You could weld some type of limiter on there so it could only swing so far?

well i don't know what you could use it for but i have an idea where it came from. by your drawing it appears to be a swivel hinge
for attaching a i-beam to and then bolting the bottom it to a column. the beam then has a knee brace attached to the end of the beam
on the top flange and an air or electric powered crane is mounted on a trolley for the bottom flange and when you put all together you have yourself a jib crane....have fun figuring out what to do with it
