I have a few questions about changing transmission fluid and the front differential fluid.

1) On the 4l60e how much fluid will i have to replace?
2) I bought the truck with 130,000 miles, now it has 140,000 miles, should i replace the filter?
3) Where to i put tranny fluid back in?
4) What tranny fluid do you guys use?
5) How do I drain the front 8.25 inch pumpkin?
6) Where do i fill the front pumpkin and with how much fluid?

2. Yeah, why not? (Get a GM, they're the best + the gasket is preformed to the pan and fits great)
3. Put the fluid back in through the tranny dipstick hole

6. There is a little plug on the side, and you want it to be a little below the plug. If you stick your finger in there you should be able to feel the fluid. Not sure how much

well you should probably flush the fluid isntead of just drainign and filling, but a drain and fill wont hburt anything.

1) according to the valvolien fluid recomendation and capacity guide ( i work for valvoline) your initial refill will be 5.0 quarts of fluid. you should use dexron 3 plus mercon fluid. its pretty much the standard fluid anymore. evrey gas station and parts store will have it.
2) yes you should change the filter. you'll need to replace the gasket anyways, so get the filter/gasket kit and install both components of it
3) the fluid will be added through the transmisison dipstick tube. a funnell will be VERY handy for this
4) the front differential has a drain plug on it. you will need a 15MM wrench/socket to remove the check/fill plug and either a 15MM or just the 3/8" drive of the rachet to remove the drain plug. simply drain the fluid and then fill it through the fill hole. the exact quantity varies, but it will be about 1.5-2 quarts. just fill it so that fluid is at the same level as the fill hole.

The rear diff will need to be uncovered tochange the fluid. remove the 10 bolts holding the cover on and the fluid will spill out. uits messy, but its the way to do it. scrap the gasket off of both surface and then either replace the gasket or use RTVC sealant. everyone has their own opinion on what works best. i use RTV and havent had problems yet so I"m sticking with it. do what you want though. the fill hols for this is on the passenger side of the differential near the pinion housing. this is 3/8" square. the 3/8" ratchet will work here. same thing as the front diff for filling. just fill it till the fluid level is at the fill hole. this is generally about 2-2.5 qts. so if you get 5 qyts of diff fluid you'll be all set to do both diffs. use 80-W90 gear lube according to GMs recommendation

Ok, sounds good. Would Kragen or Autozone have the GM tranny filter and gasket? I have the 14 bolt 9.5" in the back and i already put on a a cast aluminum diff cover with a drain plug so thats easy, just haven't changed the other 2 fluids yet. No synthetic tranny fluid?

well you can go synthetic tranny fl;uid if you want, but with that many miles on it i htink you'd probably be throwing money away and not getting anything out of it. you'd have to go to a GM dealership for the GM gasket. i personally use ATP gasket/fliter kits. they have "third hand" holes in it so you can push the bolt through the pan and gasket and the gasket will hold the bolts in place to keep them from falling out when they are upside down. makes thing much nicer. they can be found at many parts stores
