Can any one tell me from experience if a Flowmaster 40 series will fit under an 86 Bronco, it's pretty tight under there and all that the exhaust shop could fit under there is a small turbo. Any ideas?

I bought a Flowmaster 50 series for my '96 and it would not fit no matter what I tried. The frame crossmember is in the way. I was, and still am, a little pissed about it because I used the same model that Flowmaster said would fit my truck. I ended up buying a small $20 turbo muffler from Autozone. It just fits and it sounds great.

thump,I was curious as to what your turbo muffler sounds like? I am thinking about switching mufflers to get that performance V-8 sound but I don't want it too loud to where it's to the point of being annoying! any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!

I have an 81 and fit a flowmaster big block II series muffler along with a cat underneath. It was tight but it fit. The muffler is huge! On the other hand the entire exhuast system was custom so just about anything could have worked. Evan the exhaust guy said it was to big but I wanted that one for the sound level.

For informational purposes in case anyone wants to know, the muffler that is currently on the Bronc now is a Goerlich Big Max Performance Turbo. It measures about 4 1/2x10 1/2 oval. It fits nicely in the stock location but I also am missing the cats. Not as deep and loud as I wanted it to be, but it seems to be getting better sounding the more I drive. Still planning on putting a Flowmaster in there someday though! I'm just hooked on that sound!

Is removing catalytic convertors illegal? If it would help my mileage I would take mine off, but does it really hamper performance much? I've heard that sometimes they get filled up with soot and mud, so it really might make a difference on my truck, as well as anybody who has a submarine truck.

It's a Jeep thing? My Bronco thing will run over your little Jeep thing.

Re: Converters

They are stainless cases containing a ceramic honeycomb impregnated with platinum metal flakes. The platinum is the catalyst. When hydrocarbons and oxygen pass thru and the ceramic is above a certain temp, the platinum catalyzes (facilitates without being consumed) their reaction, reducing HC emissions. This raises the temp in the converter, burning off any soot or hydrocarbons built up before the ceramic was hot enough. Under normal operation, nothing is permanently deposited in the converters, so they don't "fill up". Old cats were undersized which is why many were removed to improve engine performance. That's not a problem today, so there's no reason to remove them from a stock engine. And big ones are getting cheaper... The most common reason they clog is from the ceramic substrate breaking and clogging its own internal passages. This can happen from impact, damage to the case, running the engine rich (it overheats the cats), or from IMMERSION IN WATER/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif when it's hot. But running the engine on leaded gas (the lead permanently coats the platinum) or when it's just not running right can do damage, too. If you want to reduce the damage from sudden cooling, try extending the heat shields so the water has to flow along the exhaust pipe before it can get to the bodies of the cats, but make sure they can still get air.
