ARGH, Okay, my fiance bought a 77 CJ-7 about two weeks ago and has hired me to fix all the minor problems...I'll list them for ya'll:
convert manual brakes to power brakes
fix battery cable
change all fluids
front drivers side tire rubs the leaf spring(change backspacking to??)
fuel gauge doesn't work
also, front drivers side tire is tilted(camber/caster?)
the whole Jeep wabbles while driving(it doesn't have a sway bar(yet))
cracked windshield
also, the top I think is off a wrangler because it doesn't use the snaps, it's got the slip in plastic thingies similar to my TJ, so when ordering a replacement, do I get a wrangler or a CJ one?
some sort of oil is leaking on passenger side of engine(I haven't looked closely at that yet)

Okay, I know HUGE project, but for it's got, it was worth it, so, if you have any input on any of the above(changing the fluids and battery cable I know, everything else is stuff I've never done)
thanx guys and gals : )

Jeep wabble: does it have a shackle lift, enough air in the tires, what size tires?
Soft Top: I have a newer Bestop Soft with the channels and my tub had the snaps. I would keep the newer softop hardware. The only problem I've had is on the windshield frame, the holes where the channel is screwed in is getting bigger and bigger.

That's all the advice I can give you.

Good luck.

Need a little info for some of the problems like engine and trans. But as far as the wobble goes, may be related to the tire being tilted,
bad ball joint possibly on that side, or bent axle tube. Jack it up on that side and see if you can move the tire up and down, that will
give you some idea if something is worn out. As far as the oil leak on the passenger side of the engine goes, if it is a 6 it is probably
the valve cover, hopefully not a head gasket. Hope this helps a little.

Is the engine a straight 6, 4.2? If so how many miles are on the engine? Clean off the engine and then take her out for a drive. Then check the engine afterwards for the oil. This will help in finding the oil leak.

Windsheid glass leak

Is your windsheild frame rusty? that is more likely to be leaky than the seal. after replacing the frame and the seals (between hood & windsheild frame and around glass) I no longer have any leaks.

Fuel gauge: Probably the sending unit in the tank (pretty simple swap), but before you change this check your guage and wiring. There's a good writeup on this at http://www.monsterslayer.com/jeep/Gauges.htm

Wobble: could be a number of things (likely a combo. of several) from bad ball joints (try the tip on that already mentioned), out of balance tires, worn steering shaft coupler, alignment, shackle lift (take it off if present), etc...Try having fiance move the steering wheel back/forth and see if you can determine where most of the slop is.

Cracked windshield: If it ain't leaking dont worry about it. If bent on replacing it you might look for a company near you parting out jeeps for a whole replacement windshield frame/glass especially if you have any rust underneath/bottm of the w/s frame. Collins Bros. near me will sell a good frame w/glass for $150.00 the just paint to match.

Driver's side tire tilted: Tilted how? in/out? If so, sounds like an alignment is needed, maybe a bent tie rod. Probably the source of a lot of your wobble.

Top: I've seen the slip in plastic thingies and rails used on some aftermarket tops, including the remnants of one on my CJ5, so it's not necessarily a wrangler top. Sorry don't know what else to tell you there.

Power brake conversion: Was told by some guys its easiest just to buy this as a complete set up from wrecking yard/ jeeps part out place. Collins Bros., again, has this and sells if for about $300 (I think). I haven't made this conversion yet, so can't tell you much other than what I've heard.

Oil leak: Need more info, as to its source. Clean engine and drive and see where its leaking. Could be leak around oil sending unit or oil line to mechanical gauge (simple fix). Could just be a leak in pan gasket.

Hope this helps.

Okay, update as to what I found out today about the Jeep while checking closely at everything:
It appears the guy that rebuilt it had absolutely NO CLUE what-so-ever as to what he was doing.(I know I should have looked closely prior to buying it, but hey, I like Jeep projects)
The engine is a 360 V-8, I can't identify the transfer case, the info on it I do know is it's from a truck(yeah yeah I know that doesn't help), trans doesn't look familiar to me, but he put a miloden oil pan on it. So some of the parts are great, some he forgot about I guess. For instance, half the wiring harness isn't hooked up where it belongs, which is why I'm pretty sure the gauges don't work. I had to swap in a new alternator today because the shaft of the one on there was bent. Also, the fan belts don't line up squarely so I need to figure out how to adjust that(and yes they were like before I changed the alternator). I also noticed the brake lines were set up so they rubbed the tire, and half the rubber on the lines is gone(scary I drove this thing home for her). He also put the mirrors on backwards(passenger one is on drivers side and vice versa)yikes! Jeep project from hell basically. Friday I'm going to fix the mirrors, order new brake lines. I believe he put a shackle lift on it, what's a better way to lift it? I also need to figure out the wiring schematics in my chilten's and haynes manuals and try to figure out what this guy didn't connect(I keep finding wires not hooked up to anything). Thanx guys for all your responses, more info Friday night : )

Good luck with your new project. As for the question about a better way to lift it.............
just about anything is better than a shackle lift, well maybe not a tall body lift.
Lose those longer shackles and rearch the springs if money is an issue. Of course the prefered methods are new springs or SOA

Ah, just like every purchase I make, you find out a little more bad stuff once you get it. Still its fun. As far as a lift 1-2 inch body lift is a cheap fix for now ($60-80). Suspension lift, or a combo susp. lift & small body lift, is definately the ticket. My Superlift was only about $400 delivered to my door. I've been very pleased with it. If you can't do that now you could do 2" body lift now and then add a 2 1/2 suspension lift to the body lift later. Thats what I did although I cut my body lift down to about 11/4". Also, might add I'm moving to a 4" lift. 4" suspension lift will also raise issues about extended brake lines (if you're getting new ones get longer ones now) and lengthening driveshafts. 4WD Hardware makes some good, IMHO, heavy duty standard length shackles. You might chek into those to get rid of the shackle lift and improve your steering. Tell us some more info on the tranny and t/c - does the t/c say Dana on the back side anywhere?? What type of tranny , auto. or standard, 3 speed, 4 speed? Any numbers you can find? Enjoy the wiring, I just went through that on my 74!
