*Deuce* asked,
*OK, I got the Dist. Cap with brass terminals and Cap base for an 82 Ford 300 and the coil for a 84 Ford V8,*
If you are installing it on a V-8, it sounds like you are getting somewhere.
Did you get the rotor also?
--------------------------------
*it's a short round thing with some rectangular metal plates surrounding it vertically.*
That sounds like a pretty accurate of the ugly TFI high output coil...
--------------------------------
*The 82 Ford I-6 plug wires wouldn't work with the coil so part guy pulled a set for the 84 I-6, they looked like they would work, but were only 8mm, he looked up a set of accel but they were also 8mm. Are the 84 I-6 wires the correct ones and who (auto parts store) carries good 8.5mm wires?*
Now I'm confused, you said you had a V-8 cap above, and I-6 plug wires...
Something isn't adding up here....
If you have an I-6, use the I-6 cap, if you have a V-8, use the V-8 cap...
Any of the store premium grade plug wires will work, and they are about $20.
Top of the line wires will have a spiral wrapped core, and they work the best, but are more expensive...
If using the TFI coil on an I-6, ... 84 F-150 with 300 CID I-6, WITH EEC.
If using the TFI coil on a V-8, 84 F-350 with 460 CID V-8, WITH EEC.
With EEC part should get you the correct coil wire.
---------------------------------
*I've gotten everything at Autozone so far. I was just sizing up the parts I already had last night, base screwed onto distributor, rotor fit, cap clipped on.*
Good start. If you have your plug wires on correctly, you are just about done.
----------------------------------
I then started looking at my ignition module, no blue grommet

But! its a replacement, it says NAPA TP40 Echlin Heavy Duty. It has two black grommets, on with 4 wires (black, purple, green, orange) the other has 2 (white, red). Does anyone know if this is the correct or compatible module, this is on an 84 CJ7 258.*
The grommet is the little plastic clip connected to the module housing that holds the wires in place and protects them from getting pulled out.
I think you are confusing the wiring connectors with the grommet.
Some aftermarket manufacturers don't use the grommets to identify the modules also...
That module will work on any Motorcraft/ Dura Spark ignition if it will plug in. It isn't going to hurt a thing.
FIRST PLUG, TWO WIRES.
Red, hot while cranking,
White, Hot while running.
SECOND PLUG, FOUR WIRES.
Black, module ground. Grounds through the distributor.
Green, Coil Negative. That's how the module triggers the coil.
Violet (not purple...), Distributor trigger, negative I believe,
Orange, Distributor trigger, positive I believe...
Nearly all Dura Spark modules will interchange, and the ones that don't have plugs to keep you from plugging them in, so don't break any tabs off of the connectors to get them to fit.
Get another module if the one you have will not connect up.
-----------------------------------
*It has also had the Nutter by-pass done.*
I really must look that up one day. It seems everyone with a I-6 either has one, or wants one...
--------------------------------
*Lastly, I need to make a run to the Junk Yard for a wiring harness and mounting bracket.*
Do you mean wiring harness, or coil connector?
The Scrap yard is the only place to get the bracket short of the dealership...
If you get a good donor, get the harness sides of the distributor plug, the Dura Spark plugs, and the Coil connectors. These are hard to find, and expensive if yours fail, so if you pay your money, take your time a and get your money's worth...
Don't worry about the distributor or module sides, they come with new replacement units, and often times the modules are cheaper than the harness Plugs!!
--------------------------------
*As far as mounting this thing, should I keep it isolated away from anything, such as solenoids, firewall, antennas, battery?*
I'd keep it away from radio antenna if I could, other wise, there are no restrictions.
Make sure the coil frame is grounded. If you use a stock metal bracket to mount it, that is already done...
--------------------------------
*Thanks for all the Help, Advice, Direction so far.*
No problem, several others here can help now also.
People are really catching on to this stuff...
It's pretty easy once you get the gist of it.
--------------------------------
*PS. TeamRush, if your ever in the Detroit area, Look me up for all the beer you can drink. Unless you live to close, then I might need a second mortgage.*
I don't drink as much as I let on I do...
I do EAT as much as I let on, and probably more!!
