Fender Bender

My son got in a minor fender bender this morning in the rain. No damage to the other car but my front grille is broken out. I didn't
realize that it was plastic. Is there an after-market source that's fairly reasonable $$ and not plastic that I could contact. I'll probably
have to get a cattle guard if he's (son) going to drive it!

Hey Debbie, I can't help you with aftermarket but I just found a chrome XJ grille in a junkyard. I asked the price in case this is what you need. He wants 25 bucks. If you have a black plastic grille well than let me know and I'll keep my eye out for one of those too. By the way I'm in Illinois. I don't know if thats near you but if I can help let me know.

Savanna Jones (800-603-4064) has a replacement for $27, but it's probably plastic. Them kids are sure hard on cars aren't they. Number one son did lots of damage, but none serious. Number two son is clean so far. Only five more kids to go. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for the offers. I'll keep it in mind. I called the dealer this morning to get an idea of what a replacement cost. There is a new
grill listed on Ebay that I bid on. Hopefully I'll get it. I've got $$$ invested in it and can't do too much more.

We finally solved the problem with the jumping and hesitation. It was the TPS. We put in a new CPS also, just as a preventative
measure. With the miles that are on it, the potential is there for another problem. The distributor checked out ok with the scope but
the TPS took a nose dive.

I took it out on the freeway today and it did great. I got up to 70. The ride was the smoothest I've had since we got it in October.

Well, on to the next incident. My son and four other boys were coming down from the mountain this morning after staffing the BSA
snow camp. They hit black ice and hit two cars coming up the hill. My car is in the tow yard 4 hours from here. The boys came
out with scratches but without any more serious injuries . According to the boys, they may not be at fault as the lead car on the
other side crossed over the line and the boys moved over to allow them room and hit the ice. They side-swiped the first car and then
the second one. My first call was that they had gone off the road. That meant down the side of the mountain. At least that didn't
happen. I'm borrowing my brother's car until we find out what the insurance will cover and what they are going to do. Keep your
fingers crossed that everything works out ok. All the mechanical things were finally finished and the paint job was next.

Sorry to hear about your Cherokee but am glad nobody was injured seriously. I am involved with the Boy Scouts, too. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster with my son's troop and use our XJ to take them camping all the time.

Good Luck and Best Regards /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Fred and all, thanks for the good wishes. I'm feeling rather depressed about it all. The last mechanical thing was done on
Wednesday and now it looks like it's a total. I don't know if that is based on $$ or what. I haven't seen it at all to see how
extensive the damage is so it may be sheet metal or could be frame damage. I've already told my insurance about the new
engine and all the work that has been done. I'm glad I keep receipts. That will help in determining repair or replacement value. I'm
driving a car my brother has that he's trying to sell, Chevy El Camino. It won't be my replacement but it's something to drive
temporarily. The only thing that worries me is that the owner of the lead car is making threatening phone calls to me, and the other
families.

I got the final verdict from insurance yesterday. My XJ has gone to wherever they go when they die. I got a little over twice as
much as I paid for it so that has helped with a down on a newer ZJ. Whatever any of you do, keep your receipts. You never know
when they might come in handy. BTW, if anyone is in So. California and sees a 1990 Navy XJ with side damage and no windows, it
probably was mine. It's going to go to salvage, probably Scotty's. You'd get a great new engine (just over 3000 miles), with all the
trimmings, etc and brand new tires.

I have on hold waiting for the settlement check a 1998 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 17000 miles for just over $17000. It's a 2WD so we
won't be off-roading with it but at least I'll have wheels again by the weekend.

We're still waiting for the outcome of the accident report. I have a suspicion that it'll be no-fault but the other driver confirms what my
son and the driver of my XJ said. The owner of the first car has been quieted by the insurance companies. Making threats is not
treated lightly and she was warned with a restraining order.
