Failed Emmisions on my 83 CJ7 258 and weber carbed and air bypass crap removed

Failed the CO test standard is 3.78 and mine was 3.88 at 25 mph (high speed test)

Failed to CO test standard is 2.79 and mine was 3.99 at 15 mph (low speed test)

Where do I look to fix this?

It already has a new cat.

For what it is worth, I'm not use to the laws in Texas. But, here in RI if you fail an exam, there is a limit to what you have to spend to get it to pass, and if you can't pass they give you a 2 year grace period. Just thougt it may be an option if this gets tough.


Do you still have the air bypass system, or the carbon canister. It be worth throwing back in for the time of the test.

I'm not sure how much vaccuum stuff is on your 258 since mine is an 88. But I remember that stuff being really tricky and seems useless white it sits there.

This might be a stab in the dark, but how about stuff like the 02 sensor.

Sorry some of these are vague, but it's what came to my head when you mentioned it. I'm going to be going through the same headache real soon with my 88.

Don't have any of the air bypass junk. It figures, about 6 months after I tossed everything and started this project, they started emissions testing in our county!

No 02 sensor either. computer is gone and it's a good old fashioned weber carb at this point.

Here are somethings I have done before going back tomorrow for a recheck.

Cleaned K&N air filter.
Adjusted idle mixture screw
Found the choke was only opening about 1/3 of the way when warm. It is now fixed!

Also advanced timing a little bit. Not sure if this will help or not??

Make sure the engine has warmed up nicely. I'd drive it for at least 15 minutes prior to taking it to get tested.

You seem very close, how about a little alcohol in the tank.

An oil and filter change sometimes help. You were very close to the standards.

Advancing the timing can create more CO. For test purposes the timing should be at factory spec, or even a degree or two retarded from there.

Reset timing, fresh oil and filters, a little alcohol in the gas, fresh plugs, and a thorough warm-up got my '78 through with plenty of room to spare. Of course '78 standards are a lot more lenient.

If that had failed, my next thought was to reinstall the air injection manifold and connect it to a small oxygen bottle and regulator.

I'm surprised that they didn't fail you for missing and modified equipment.
The purpose of all that "junk" is to keep the engine running clean and efficient. In California you'd have to put it all back on and make it work no matter what the cost.

Woo Hoo Passed! was Failed Emissions help needed

Just returned from retest and passed.

Aside from fixing the choke and cleaning the K&N filter, I changed oil, plugs and dumped 24 OZ. of Isoprpyl Alcohol into the tank. Drove it hard for about 15 minutes before getting it inspected. My CO levels dropped to 0.0 on both test.
