factory option??

I am writing this, wondering if this was a factory option or an aftermarket accessory. Maybe someone could help. It's this little slot in the dash of my 84 cj-7. Sits right above the ashtray. It takes money. At unspecified time intervals you must put in a twenty dollar bill. Where does it go from there? Just seems to disappear. Every couple hours driving time you must deposit money. Twentys are accepted but fiftys and hundreds are prefered. Just wondering if this is from factory or if previous owner had it installed. Can it be removed?

That slot was not an option. It was standard equipment on all models.

Anyone who says he doesn't have one on his Jeep is either trying to fool you, or he put the optional upgrade in directly under the hood, to eliminate any restrictions.

How did you get one that takes twenties. Mine wouldn't take anything less than hundreds and
sometimes requires thousands (even though they are hard to find). I did a mod from a write up on the
web so that now it takes checks and credit cards.

I do have an ashtray too. I bought it for $10 at a salvage yard in '87 and even though it had never been
used, I thought that was pretty high. I didn't realize how rare these were.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Yes, Bwana. Jeep take LOTS of money to run. J-E-E-P means Just Empty Every Pocket, and that little slot is where the cash goes. I have an ashtray that will never go back in our '79 CJ. Anybody want it? Whoa up there CJDave.
Just a thought . Our cj does have a ashtray and it is handy for holding things
like fuse's or keys- .Small stuff that you want to keep track of.
I always keep a box or two of fuses in ours.
You can also brag how you got the fancy jeep even came with an ashtray. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Yeah, Dave, I'd like to have the ashtray. When I put the AC unit in I'm going to need one on each side,
but like Gregg said it's real handy for holding small stuff. If you really don't want it though, I'll give it a
good home.

I believe that slot comes standard on ALL 4X4's. From owning 2 full size cherokee's, 3 bronco's, and presently a 90 YJ I have figured this out. Stock 70's cherokees's and 80's bronco's require 50's each time you drive it. "Modified" 78 & 79 bronco's require 100's each time you "start" them. And my "econo" 4-banger YJ requires 20's for each drive. I once tried to fool it with a 10 and it worked for a couple of miles but then spit it out and died. I swear I heard that jeep laugh!

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Our '79 has one of them things. I believe it is an air flow director for the heating system, although it is quite inneffective./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

That little plastic box thingy is for fresh outside air, when the fresh air vent is opened up for the passenger side of the vehicle air will flow from the open ended plastic box thingy. It will not work when in heat mode.

If I get this correctly, I should tell my wife that we have a collectors item because of the ashtry and a glove box in a 76'CJ5. My slot in the dash takes any donomination you can give it. Just the smaller the bill the the more it takes.

NOPE!!
Nothing less than a $20, and you will WALK!!
(While the Jeep giggles at you...)

I have Harley Davidsons on top of owning a Jeep.
Everybody thinks HD stands for Harley Davidson.
It doesn't.
It stands for Hundred Dollars...
Put any number in front of it you want to...
... $$ ?? HD $$ ...

You all seem to have Jeeps that have the same problem...
My stuff just has to stay broke, cause I spend my money on steaks, beer and strippers! (in that order!)

I never should have inserted that credit card cause I think the jeep remembered the numbers. At least I can feign ignorance about all of the boxes of parts that keep showing up on the doorstep. "I don't know who ordered those Dear, but since they are here I might as well install them" hehe
