F*$king dealer again. I need a little EDUCATED help figuring out my speedo gear requirements.

Does anybody know how to find out the part number for a speedo gear for an 88 YJ? I have seen the chart floating around for later model jeeps, but can't find one for the earlier models. The dealer insists that I must bring it in so they can charge me $100-200 for spending 5 minutes installing a $10 part. He went off on how the fact that I changed the tranny and whatnot will make it near impossible; yet he could not explain why the change in tranny mattered to a gear attached to the output shaft of a bone stock transfer case. As far as I know, all that matters is the axle gearing (4.10) and tire diameter (33"). Please help, before I go postal at the parts counter!

I used the following information from Randy's R&P to figure out my speedo gear.

I used a car with an accurate speedo to figure out what speed my CJ was showing(about 73) at 60mph. I then used the formulas from Randy's to figure out how many teeth I needed on my speedo gear. The dealer looked up the part number and asked me how many teeth I needed. It was simple and I got it right the first time.

Good Luck,

Tom

Sound like their trying to make you grab your ankles on this one. Changing a tranny will not change the ratio if the speedo is connected to the transfer case. Most speedos (I believe yours included) are linked directly to the rear output shaft in the transfercase. You are correct about the tire size and or gear changing.

Try these sites I found the one for my 83 CJ and cost $7.90 and installed it about 15 minutes..
