When swapping out 258's in '82 CJ, am I better off installing 'new' motor w/ the tranny attached, or not attached?

But for unhooking the additional tranny stuff and skid plate, it would seem it'd be easier to mate tranny up to 'new' motor when both components are out of the vehicle, than trying to line them up & bolt 'em together w/ the tranny still in vehicle and motor is hanging from the engine hoist.

I am doing this evolution in my driveway w/ little to no help (alone). (I know it is not going to be easy[!], but beggars can't be choosers! And hey!, I'm a Marine... I don't know any better!
) And, 'oh by the way', it's supposed to snow tonite!

Thanks again.

Re: ENGINE SWAP ??? Easier w/ or w/o tranny attach

moving that entire assembly would be a bear, but it would definitely be easier to get the tranny/tcase attached out of the jeep

if you were a bit closer i'd come over and give you a hand

good luck

This summer I put a new frame on my CJ7. I moved the motor over with the tranny and t-case attached. However I did not have a body, grille, fenders ect to go around either. I think it was easier to do it all at once. Just make sure the hoist can support it (I think most can though)

I have done it both ways. If I am not mistaken you have plenty of room to get your tranny bolts in, I would do it with just the engine, But that may not be the easiest way. I am unsualy doing it by myself too, and just can't seem to mannage it all at once, and my hoist does not lift high enough,, Now if the grill were out,,, then with a floor jack you may be better off with the hole thing...

Guess I did not help much.

Both times I left the tranny in place and had no problem getting the engine to align. Just make sure you have the bellhousing, clutch lever and throw out bearing already installed on the tranny. You don't want to have to deal with getting the throw out bearing centered when you are stuffing the engine in.

I have pulled engine/tranny together on other vehicles but it's usually easier to pull and replace the engine alone.

That's the hard way. When I swapped my frame, I removed the axles and set the engine, tranny, skid plate on the ground with the frame around it. I unbolted the skid plate and mounts and my neighbor, his son-in-law and I lifted the frame from around the engine and tranny. I've got a 305 so we had to slide the frame forward a little to get around the exhausts.

Should've added that I intend to take the grill out to facilitate the operation.

Besides, grill is splitting down the right inner support (by where radiator attaches), so I will take the opportunity to get it welded up at the same time.

Thanks for insight.
