i have a 1987 jeep wrangler 4 cyd. i"ll start the engine and it runs great for 10 to 15 seconds then stops.it only does this when the tempeture is below 40 degrees.i have in the past rode it in low gear untill it warms up,which it will run good for the rest of the day. help!!!!

Can we assume that it restarts without difficulty? That is, what you're really saying is that the thing won't idle until it is warmed up??? ...or ...are you saying that you get it started and can do abslolutely nothing to keep it running for more than 10 second intervals?

Broaden your description just a bit so someone doesn't run off on some dissertation in the wrong direction.

Can we also assume that the warming in low gear is because it will not function in any other gear (as in bucking, sputter, stumble, etc.)?


Sounds like a choke (or some fuel enrichment) problem (this is a pre-injected version, isn't it?).

IT STARTS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM.RUNS GREAT FOR 10 TO 15 SECONDS,THEN IT COMPLETY DIES OUT.ENEN IF I HOLD THE GAS PEDAL DOWN.THEN IT STARTS RIGHT BACK UP.

According to this jeep/tech
you've got an injected engine (as you can see ..I didn't know that from your post). This would lead to some temperature sensor defect since it starts okay (starting/initial squirts) ..but doesn't employ any fuel enrichment to allow it to run at that temperature.

Check for codes ...this may help you.

I hope that this heads you in the right direction.

THANKS FOR THE FFEDBACK.ALSO YES IT IS FUEL INJECTED,I WILL TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC MONDAY AND I WILL POST WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THANKS WILLIE T.
