The crank bearings went out on a 440 Xenoah engine. I disassembled the engine and had a shop replace the bearings and reassemble the crank. After putting the engine back together and starting it up, the engine backfires. It has a cdi and stator plate is set on the crank case boss marks. Also coolant leaks out from around the cylinder head gasket, but does not leak into the cylinder. The gaskets are new. Should I have used a liquid gasket on the gasket. And what would be causing the backfiring.

I am not real familar with your engine so I'll give you some general tips. First swap the plug wires around.. could you have possibly reversed them when reassembling the motor? Most motors do not use any sealer on the head gaskets. I would check the head for warpage with a good straight edge also make sure all old gasket is removed and there are no imperfections in either the head or cylinder surfaces. You can lap the head by using a piece of 400 grit sand paper on a extremely flat surface like a piece of glass. Polish it in a figure eigtht pattern with a little water. As you progress check the gasket surface and when you see a polish across the whole surface you are done.

I would guess that you have a air leak. Pull the head back off and check for warped head. You should not be leacking fluid out of the head gasket, even if its not going in the cylinder. Good luck! Let us know what you find.
