hey just recently my jeep started backfireing alot. usually after it was at high rpms and i shift gears. what exactly causes it to backfire and are their any simple ways of going about fixing this problem? thanks.

There is a little bit more to it than that....
Common causes are running lean, bad timing, sliped timing gear, etc.....
You need to confirm the things you can...like timing...make sure you don't have a vacuum leak (can cause lean condition), etc.

The easiest fix is to take to a mechanic....

It’s also helpful to know if the backfire is through the exhaust or intake and is it one single loud backfire or a series.

ok. its the amc 5.0L 304 v8. and as far as the backfire sound goes its one loud on that sounds like a gunshot. the engine has about 116k miles on it. any other info u might need?
