Well, I'm wondering if my o2's are bad, I did have a SES light when I bought my truck, so I unplugged it and they never came back... Sometimes it smells like my truck is running rich, but tonight it smelled fine. Is there anyway to do the thing to make the computer flash ses light to show the code? IE. SES blink, blink...pause.... Blink.... Meaning 21. I know we did that with our tahoe. Also I went to buy a airfilter, FRAM... Well it was 16 bux! I had might as well spend alittle more and get a K&N or amsoil... think?

with a 97 you have OBDII which means you cannot make it flash codes for you. you'll haev to have the codes scanned using a sode scanner....hmm, imagine naming it that. autozone will do this for you free of charge. that will let you know exactly what has triggered the SES light. on my 96, it was regularly the O2 sensors.

What did you unplug? HOpefully not the O2 sensors...

Anyway, your basically getting into a shady topic if you ask people opinions on K&n vs. conventional filters. Everyone's got their own opinion, but in general, the K&N's definitely flow better, but do not filter as well as normal paper filters. Hope this helps sum things up from previous discussions....

Anyway, I had an SES light on my truck once and used a Snap-On scanner to read the codes and the bank #2 o2 sensor #1 was bad. It was causing the engine to just dump fuel into the side of the engine causing me to get around 4 mpg and the exhaust smelled like you could light a match and have a flame thrower!

Problem is, this will kill your Cat real real quick. Your post cat sensor will read your cat's output and if it stops filtering enough then what will happen is the SES light will flash for about 20 seconds and you won't be able to go over 2000 rpm. This is the computer telling you that you are very close to killing your cat and you need a new o2 sensor now!

Mine did that to me after driving with the SES light on for a month, truck got mad at me

Ok, then i guess i summarized wrong. I just thought thats what the general opinion was. I know you aren't in favor of them jason, but i thought it was because they don't filter good enough. Anyways, i think i'll try to not summarize things anymore, i never seem to get it right.....

Well it doesn't smell bad enough to light on fire... And that sucks I can't make'er flash

And as far as air filters... I really don't know, I'd like to get a amsoil air filter but I have never seen one for sell in any shop and I'm guessing they will want a arm and left nut for it
