Hi All.

Does anybody know if a Duramax would fit in an 89 jimmy (fullsize) 6.2l? Would a 700 r-4 mate to it as well?

Thanks,
Mike

With the kind of torque and hp the Duramax makes, you'd be better off getting a 4L80E or the auto the newer trucks use with the Duramax for the conversion. I know a built up TH700R4 can take about 450hp, but I dunno about torque. You'd be pushing it with a Duramax.

First you will have to find one at a reasonable price.
I would think a Penisula Diesel marine ap 6.5 with a GMT8 turbo, or better yet their twin turbo version with a mechanical fuel pump, and a Spearco inner cooler would be a better way to go. It only has 400+ ponies, 600+ ft lbs of torque! Is that enough?

Willy,
I saw one of the 6.5 motors mentioned at the diesel page roundezvous. Nobody that I know of has a 6.6 in there 80's or 90's body style truck. As there have been very few, less than 5?!? on the open market. Someone on TDP got a dmax on ebay recently, but who knows as of yet what he is going to do with it. You would have to go to the dealer and hope you can buy one crated. Right now the Dmax plant is building less than/barely meeting demand for the 25/35 series trucks, and the fact that next month a new 4500/5500/6500/7500 series is coming out using the dmax as it's base motor. The 45/55 series will have a sfa 4x version, probably late 02 to early 03, along with ext and crew cabs. The 45/55 series is only offered with the 6.6/8.1 zf6sp and Allsison.
You will probably need to do a body lift as the 6.6 is taller than the 6.2/6.5 blocks. And definitly if mounted with a Allison. Even the 01-2 trucks have body lifts to handle the Allison.
re a cummins. This is very do able, in both the 80's and 90's bodies. I've read/heard that The Turbo Diesel Register (yes I know its a Dodge diesel site)has insructions on installing the B5.9 in any of the big three trucks. The 90's body in 4wd is the hardest of the bunch to install a 5.9, due to the front IFS system. But if you're doing a SFA, this should not be an issue!
Right now if I was to build my truck up, I'd do a Peninsular Diesel long block and start adding the goodies needed to build up a 6.5 to over 300 ponies/ 500+ ft lbs of torque. It's very do able in any yr truck that is stock with a 6.2/6.5.
If there is a ph# for them, I would call them and get info. I believe there are a few others advertising on The Diesel Page that offer low compression motors for sale also, but Peninsular is probably the best manufacture.

Ok, I saw on a site that sells 6.5L TD crates they wanted about $4275 for a complete rebuilt 96-99 long block with no core charge. Thats from http://htttp://www.usdieselparts.com. Is this a good company? I saw a page that had sold complete long blocks for $2300 and a $400 core charge. But that sounds strangely cheap but I don't know. Anyway, you think going with a 6.5 TD long block then adding all my own turbos, injection systems, intake, etc. is the way to go? The 6.5 would be much easier to drop in my truck since parts are readily available. Also, would the allison bolt up to this engine or just the dmax? And, last but not least, I would have to get the computer from a diesel truck of the same year and everything as mine but that wouldn't run the allison right? Does GM make a stand alone computer for that tranny yet like they do for the 4L60E?

If you are going to do a 6.5, get an engine from a 98 or 99+. From 95-about 97, there was a casting problem, causing these years #8 cylinder to run hot! Like blowing up engine etc at 103K like mine did! The later models this has been fixed. It's worth the extra cost. Also the later mid 97+ models have a oil spray under the pistons for added cooling.
Parts are readaly availible makes sense> Much cheaper to do retro. Personally, unless you just have to have a diesel, changing a gasser to diesel or vis versa will be a lot of work. You may want to look for a wrecked truck with a 6.5 to scavange all the harness's, computer brain etc off it. A 93/94 have emechanical pumps, best for max rebuild HP. So you would not need a computer. The 94/95 computers are chippable, 96+ need reprograming.
Jet tranny? what ever the remainder of company is called, brain f**t has ways of making 4L80E's work in non computer controlled trucks, I would imagine they can do them for the 4L60E. I would probably go with a built 700R4 personally.
I think finding a Allison 1000 series tranny will be just as easy as finding a 6.6. Older versions would be easier.

When my engine went out a feb 99, I thought about a Cummins, that was $9-10G's just for the engine, and another 40+ hours to fabricate and install everything. Not too mention needing an I/C unit, different rad, hoses etc.
Build up what you got, or get another project........oh wait a minute, you have two? going now!...ahhhh what's another. Go find a diesel and build it up!

Lol, let me actually finish a project before I start a new one/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. Umm, so what all is out there for the vortec trucks? I'm not into that power programmers and that type of stuff. Experience in the past has been just having to buy premium gas and getting worse mileage while gaining 3 rear wheel hp. Although I will use one to recalibrate speedo. I am eventually thinking of either a turbo or a pro-charger super charger but not till after I rebuild the 454. Anyone make rebuild kits for these?

I've seen headers for the Vortec's. I know you can always fab up an improved air intake and have a good, mandrel bent, wider than stock exhaust with high flow cats and mufflers put on there. There's those throttle body spacers, that'd be a couple hp. No more than 10-15 though.

I know GM Performance came out with a high flow intake manifold for the 350 Vortech's, so they may have something similar for the 454 Vortech./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif Might want to go to your local GM dealership's parts department and check out their GM Performance Parts catalog./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif I've gotten to look at it a little when I wasn't out on the road, and there's some cool stuff in there./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Try this article out for sizehttp://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/features/GMT560.htm
Also at gmc.com there is some info in the medium truck area. I also have an email from a dealer listing all the options for the 2wd reg cabs that will be instock sometime by mid to late January. Supposidly a bunch have been built and are just waiting for 02 to arrive. As the manufactures can not legally intro an 03 model until 02!
If you want optionlist send me an email at blt2ski@hotmail.com I should forwarn you it's a looooooong list of options!
2 hp/torque options on the 6.6 and 8.1, exhaust brakes, suspension seats, multiple wb sizes,.....
Now if they would just get the 4wd crew cabs out!!!

I'm not going to waste cash on a KN air intake system if I'm gonna throw a super charger on there someday. I'm going with either pro-charger or whipple. Lately I've been hearing bad things about pro-charger so I'm leaning more torwards the whipple. It's 3995 for the unit from whipple. They claim an average hp and torque reading at 416hp and 593 torque. And 546 ft/lbs at 1600 rpm/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif.
