Don\'t throw stuff out ?

Could a pressure plate be resurfaced like a flywheel ? I am just curious since someone gave me one ,heavy duty and it has a few blue burn marks on it.I know mine was not in the best possible shape when I put it back in.Should I keep it at the top of my junk pile or at the bottom ?I know if I throw it out I will need it someday.
when I was doing my dash I needed the old plastic cover that went around the gauges for a template,And I could have sworn I kept it for that purpose ,but I must have thrown it out in a cleaning frenzy.Just goes to show ya don't throw things out,or it will come back to haunt you.

They can be resurfaced. I did it when I was a broke kid. Now that I'm a broke adult I save my shekels and buy new - not rebuilt.

If the only problem is a shiny-glazed surface with a few blue spots, first give it a VERY close inspection. Use a magnifying glass and one of the commercial crack-finding kits. If you are absolutely sure it is free of the tiniest crack, work it over with sandpaper and put it in the top of the pile. If you find any hairline cracks, put it in the bottom of the pile and use it for your core if you buy a rebuilt.

I might have been born at night, but it wasn't LAST night.

Re: Don\'t throw stuff out ?

Resurfacing a presure plate takes down the height from the mounting surface to pressure surface, resulting in less force being applied to the clutch disc. It has sucsessfuly been done, but it will be a weaker unit (pressure wise) than a new stock one. If all you do is drive your Jeep, it will probably work, but if it sees ANY level of severe duty, it will prematurely fail.

If there are no grooves or 'waves' in the plate, don't worry about the blue...

If you can't catch your fingernail on a groove, don't worry about it.
If you lay a straight edge across the flywheel, and you can't slip a 0.005" feeler gauge anywhere along the straight edge , don't worry about it.
Do the straight edge like you are cutting a pizza, across the face of the flywheel in 6 or 8 places, all crossing the center.
