Flatties are know for their flexy frames and stress cracks right? They are also known to be light weight but be very underpowered right?

Here is what i am thinking: Take the 134 and 3 spd out and replace them with a 90s 2.5L and AX5. The 2.5L is light weight, FI, makes decent power (150Hp right?), doesn't suck gas and the AX5 is plenty strong to handle a 2.5L and it is light. This would be a light weight combo that wouldn't crack your frame and still provide good performance. The only problem is no one makes a AX5 to D18 adapter. Is there any to do it using the dana 18?

one more thought. I dont know how similar the two engines are but an Iron Duke out of a mid 80s GM has TBI. Maybe it would be easier to do an Iron duke/T5 or T4??/dana18 ????? I dont know if it would be worth the trouble though...

swappin axles would cause this to be more trouble than its worth. AA and Novak dont sell a thing for AX5 to d18. besides it is just a thought, dont even own a flattie... (yet/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif). The reason why i have never heard of it is probally because no one has ever done it.

Problem is the AX15 is about 6 inches longer than a T-90 and the driveshaft will end up being way too short. Flatties have an 80 inch wheelbase.

There are a couple auto trannies that are short. The TH350 is 21-3/4" long, which sounds daunting, but when adjusted for the bellhousing, it is equivalent to a ~15-1/4" transmission. Which isn't too bad, if you can come up with a CV driveshaft. The nice thing about a Dana 18 transfer case is that it is nice and thin and the driveshaft is offset and low down so the angles are better for the ujoints than a 20. That's only 5.5" longer than stock, which is crowded but doable. See:
