Do Jeeps roll?

I don't mean roll-over, we all know that. What I'm talking about is rolling on a level surface. My garage is level and if I put my Jeep in neutral, it rolls back on it's own, another jeep I had did the same thing. These two had std trans, my 98 Grand Cherokee won't roll in neutral, and the 68 Camaro (std trans) i had didn't roll back either. Is is it a weight thing, suspension, or are jeeps just always raring to go somewhere?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Our CJ finds the SLIGHTEST slope and chases it. Big wheels; not much weight. We don't DARE park in neutral-no-brake./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

When you park it at night just tell it to stay. Jeeps listen when you talk nice to them./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

The only way the jeep would roll is if the reaction force of the garage floor was not parallel to gravity - i.e., the floor's not level. Larger tires will magnify the effect. Do an FBD (free body diagram, for you engineering types) of the jeep tire, and you will see the vectors more clearly.

Why would you not park it in gear? Mine's an auto, so it seldom rolls in park. :)

First time I drove my Jeep to work I parked it on an almost level spot and went inside - an hour later I got a call from the receptionist - apparently it jumped out of first and rolled backwards across the parking lot and lodged into the side of a minivan. If there had been a car in the space directly behind my jeep it would have most likely been a no damage situation (bumper to bumper. As it was I bent the spare tire stop bracket and scuffed the end of the bumper as it slid along the side of the mini van. The whole side of the mini van door was mashed and deep dented scratches along most of the side. Jeep 1 Mini Van 0

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif One of the equipment operators for the local Irrigation District parked a 3/4 Ton GMC on the canal bank in neutral, and it sat there for half an hour before silently and sickeningly rolling into the canal. He looked back to where the pickup WAS, and it was a blank spot. He turned toward the water, and there was the water jug just bobbing up and down on the surface.....the GMC was far below./wwwthreads_images/icons/blush.gifBLUB!

If you mean roll in nuetral with the engine running it could be because of sympathetic drag. The parts
in the front of the gearbox get fluid moving and it turns the output side. Happens mostly on
vehicles up in the air on jacks running

I always thought that Jeeps were allergic to flat level ground. I know that whenever I'm up on the side of a big rock the Jeep likes to stay in one place /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

My friend tosses a 2x4 or a 4x4 board down in his driveway and just runs over it whenever he pulls in so he doesn't have to put it in gear (he has no E-brake) so he can work on it. before I had my E-brake fixed I put a cinderblock in the driveway and drove past it, then turned the tires and drifted back onto it.

Well I know my YJ has a mind of its own.
One day I was returning from our camp and had to pick up our mud boat. I backed up my YJ and put on the parking brake and let the engine running to cool off the interior. (I know the top should have been off but I like my jeep and don't intend on having it stolen.) well while I was in the boat trying to drive onto the trailer, High Tide (the name of my YJ, now you know why) decided to take a bath and backed into the launch. Water flooded my interior and everything got soaked.
Everything went under enough to get wet but not enough to get water into the motor. I just put it into 4low and drove up the launch.
Now yall know why I call my YJ High Tide.

P.S. how do I get the moon men on this thing?

To get a moon man put a word into brackets like this (smile), only use these [].
When it is done, it will look like this /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif. For all the moon man faces, check the Mark up feature when your on the post or reply screens.

About High Tide, maybe it has some aspirations to follow in its GPA ancestor's footsteps. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I get the biggest kick out of these little moonguys/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif. In last issue of the Jeep factory magazine there was a moonguy with a three-day old beard./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif I enlarged the picture and sent it to a guy who was recovering from a crash./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif That reminds me Gibby, of a Caterpillar D-6 we had with a dozer. It has an oil-immersed wet clutch, and on cold mornings you could NOT get it in gear because of sympathetic drag. Finally I got smart and would just reach over and touch the hydraulic lever to raise the blade. That would stop the countershaft in the tranny./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
