Discovery Brake Problem

I recently retired my 82 landcruiser from everyday driving and decided to buy a used 96 Discovery. My biggest problem is the anit-lock brake light sometimes will not go off. The brake pedal sometimes shimmies under my foot (even under normal braking conditions) and then I hear a pumping noise from somewhere. I have read about the sensors...but am I possibly starting to drive to soon. I read about a self test the brakes preform and then the lights should go off. Tonight I was driving down hill on a wash board area ( I live on a dirt road) and the pedal vibrated so bad I thought I wasn't going to stop. I had the brakes looked at and they are in good shape. I just want to know is this normal? Or can the sensors cause this problem. After checking in my area, I'm beginning to think no one but dealers work on these cars....

Yep - they're too expensive for shadetree mechanics to mess with, and most people who can afford them can also afford the dealer's labor rates. PM dfry44 or wtbaja, but don't expect a quick response from either.

What you have is a sensor that has either worked its way out slightly or has simply gone bad. These are easy to replace. First, try tapping the sensors back into their holes with a rubber mallet. If that doesnt make a difference, take it to a dealer and have them read the codes for you. Up to 95 were capable of diagnosing ABS codes without a computer. Once you find out which sensor is giving you grief, order it on-line. Sensors are about $200-$260 on-line. The good news is, they take about 10 minutes to change. Good luck.
