hey , im new to the site so here it goes: I put disc brakes on my 72 commando last year.I used the brakes off of a 81 cj, put in the propotrtioning valve and they still dont lock up like the back will.I left in the orginal master cylinder and booster but, I did take out the little check valve in the master cylinder.I am not sure if I need a new master cylinder for a 72 commando or a 81 cj? Right now the commando is on jack stands getting a reverse shackle and fixing the spring over that some
pound head from ga. butchered up!No offence to anybody from ga.Thanks for any suggestions

do a search for "disc brakes" on this bbs and be sure to change it to "view all posts" instead of "last week". There have been many different solutions that have worked out. A common one is an adjustable proportioning valve, like one from www.summitracing.com ot www.jegs.com. If nothing else makes you think that the master cyl. is bad, this might be the trick for you. just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply. I did a past search but, found nothing on master cylinders.I read in different magazines how some guys did change the master cylinders and others didnt. Some say the bore or the piston on the drum master cylinder does not have a long enough stroke or the volume for the disc brakes.

I used a non-power master cylinder from a CJ with discs, but I've since switched to a power booster master from a '79 Scout, which had the same disc brake setup as CJ's. I had to space it 1/4" from the firewall but otherwise the Scout bracket cleared my clutch master quite nicely.
