Is it possible to change steering knuckles (ball joints and all) from a 81 CJ7 (disc brakes) on to a 76 Dana 30 with drum brakes, thus converting drum brakes to disc brakes ?

I want to use these axles from the 76 (lower ratio) but I sure don't want to have drum brks.

OK, you have an 81 CJ with disc brakes. Is there some reason that want to change the complete axle?

Get a axle master kit (bearings etc.) and just change the gear ratio.

Yes there are some things you need to know and tools you need to have but why would you swap in an older asle with drum brakes to change gear ratios?

Lots and Lot of info on ring/pinion change if you do a search.....

Good Luck

He has all the parts.. it's just a matter of what he wants to rebuild. While I'm sure that either axle would benifit from new upper/lower balljoints (rebuilding the spindle and repacking the wheel bearings with new seals), why does he want to rip the axle out and put in the same thing but different?

OK, here's an idea.... rip the axle out.... take it and the other one apart, clean the whole mess up and pick the best parts to assemble the axle you want, new bearings, new balljoints, new wear parts in the spindles.... hmm that's sorta what I did last year... but I just got some used parts off of eBay and a master kit.

Whatever you do.... you don't want to just stick some unknown axle under your Jeep and smack your outer knuckles with disc brake on and call it good.

Good Luck

I have never set up a set of gears though I understand how it is done I would not trust myself, anyway the axles in question (out of the 76 actually have less miles than my 81) are in a rolling chassis that is available to me but I was unsure about the knuckle change.

Thanks for for your ideas.

Don't recall the break between "big brake" and the thinner 7/8" rotor setup. Seems like it was a mid 1980 change over (but we all know how AMC was...
) *IF* the caliper brackets are "6 bolt" just swap the disc parts, and grind your knuckles slightly to clear the calipers ( my writeup). If you have the "2 bolt" brackets and 7/8" rotors, you can simple swap everything from the knuckle out.

PS *DON'T go by rotor thickness only! A bud just pulled his down (to swap in a D44) and found a 6 bolt setup with the cheaper to buy 7/8" rotors (stoopid POs
).... *now* he figures out why the brakes were crappy!
